Waveguide information

What is a waveguide?

Waveguides are structures that direct the flow of electromagnetic waves, such as light or microwaves, from one point to another. They are commonly used in telecommunications, radar, and optical fiber systems to efficiently transmit signals with minimal loss. Waveguides can be made from metal, dielectric, or a combination of materials, and their shape and size are carefully designed to support specific frequencies and modes of propagation. Their main advantage is the ability to control and confine electromagnetic energy, making them essential in high-frequency and optical applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a waveguide engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Waveguide Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, physics, and electromagnetics, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with simulation software like HFSS or CST, experience with vector network analyzers, and knowledge of RF/microwave measurement techniques are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication help engineers design reliable systems and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These skills are crucial for ensuring the optimal design, testing, and implementation of waveguide components in high-frequency communication and radar systems.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals working as waveguide engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Waveguide engineers often encounter challenges such as precision alignment, managing signal losses, and ensuring compatibility with other optical or RF components. Working with sensitive materials and maintaining strict tolerances requires attention to detail and a strong understanding of physics and engineering principles. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams—such as design, manufacturing, and testing—is common, and effective communication is key to resolving integration issues. Continuous learning and staying updated with industry advancements can help professionals address these challenges successfully.

What is the difference between Waveguide vs RF Engineer?

AspectWaveguideRF Engineer
Required CredentialsEngineering degree, specialized training in waveguide technologyEngineering degree, RF certifications (e.g., FCC, RF certification)
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, manufacturing facilities, research centersTelecommunications, broadcasting, aerospace industries
Industry UsageDesign and development of microwave and millimeter-wave systemsDesign, testing, and optimization of radio frequency systems

While waveguides are physical components used to direct microwave signals, RF engineers design and optimize systems that utilize these components. Both roles often overlap in industries like telecommunications and aerospace, but waveguide specialists focus on the hardware, whereas RF engineers work on system-level performance.

Job description

Anduril Industries is a defense technology company with a mission to transform U.S. and allied military capabilities with advanced technology. By bringing the expertise, technology, and business model of the 21st century's most innovative companies to the defense industry, Anduril is changing how military systems are designed, built and sold. Anduril's family of systems is powered by Lattice OS, an AI-powered operating system that turns thousands of data streams into a realtime, 3D command and control center. As the world enters an era of strategic competition, Anduril is committed to bringing cutting-edge autonomy, AI, computer vision, sensor fusion, and networking technology to the military in months, not years.
ABOUT THE TEAM
The Anduril Battlespace Awareness Radar team develops state-of-the-art radar systems to tackle significant security challenges for America and its allies. We're seeking a Quality Inspector to serve as a critical quality gatekeeper for radar hardware, with a primary focus on printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs) and RF subassemblies. In this role you'll partner closely with RF engineers, manufacturing engineers, technicians and operations to ensure every board, module, and assembly that moves through production meets the rigorous standards required for defense-grade hardware.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Perform detailed inspection of PCBAs, RF subassemblies, and cable assemblies to IPC-A-610 and IPC/WHMA-A-620 Class 3 standards for workmanship, solder quality, and conformance to engineering drawings.
  • Conduct incoming, inline and EOL inspection of purchased PCBs, RF components, and materials to verify conformance to drawings, specifications, and purchase order requirements before release to production.
  • Perform measurements using calibrated equipment (calipers, micrometers, height gauges, microscopes) and support equipment calibration and material shelf-life programs.
  • Verify assemblies match the latest engineering revisions and BOMs, and document inspection results in the ERP/MES system.
  • Identify and document non-conformances, support Material Review Board (MRB) disposition, and participate in root-cause and corrective action (8D, RCCA, or equivalent).
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of inspection plans, work instructions, and acceptance criteria alongside Quality and Manufacturing Engineering.
  • Support internal and external audits and drive continuous-improvement projects that raise quality without unnecessary process overhead.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with manufacturing, engineering, and supplier quality to resolve quality issues and drive process improvements.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 3+ years of quality inspection experience in an electronics manufacturing environment, with a minimum of 2 years inspecting PCBAs or electronic assemblies.
  • Hands-on experience inspecting electronic and RF assemblies (PCBs, wire harnesses, power supplies, or microwave/RF components) and using RF testing Equipment (VNAs, Oscilloscopes, SA, Multimeter, etc.)
  • Current or prior IPC-A-610 and/or IPC/WHMA-A-620 certification.
  • Proficiency reading and interpreting engineering drawings, electrical schematics, wire run lists, and detailed work instructions.
  • Experience with incoming/receiving inspection and precision measuring instruments, including microscopic visual inspection.
  • Strong attention to detail with the confidence to make difficult reject calls when product reliability is at stake.
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret clearance; U.S. citizenship required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience in aerospace, defense, or radar/RF hardware production environments.
  • J-STD-001 soldering inspection certification or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with RF-specific assemblies - waveguide, antenna arrays, or microwave component integration.
  • Experience in a facility operating under AS9100 or ISO 9001 QMS.
  • Associate or technical degree in a related field.
  • Experience with ECAD tools (e.g., Altium) for reviewing designs during inspection.
  • Practical experience with high-reliability harness and circuit board automated testing.
