Job Description

Performs skilled work in the installation, testing and repair of water meters. Trains and supervises semiskilled employees, maintains records, and prepares reports for Customer Service Manager.

Essential Functions

  • Plans, coordinates and supervises the work of employees in the installation, testing and repair of water meters.
  • Provides assistance to customers checking for internal plumbing leaks.
  • Installs, tests and repairs water meters.
  • Provides assistance with distributing shut off for nonpayment notices including shutting off the curb stop.
  • Inspects tools and equipment for condition and proper use; supervises the maintenance and repair of equipment.
  • Performs tests on various water meters using standard bench equipment; disassembles, repairs and assembles water meters; paints repaired meters. Maintains test accuracy of meter testing equipment in accordance with the State of Connecticut, Weights & Measures Division.
  • Maintains records of all meters repaired, tested and cleaned.
  • Inventories all meter parts and meters, and all other supplies and equipment and prepare requests for replacement when needed.
  • Prepares monthly report of work completed; keeps employee records of attendance.
  • Follows OSHA and standard safety procedures and regulations.
  • Performs the duties of a Water and Sewer Maintainer/Equipment Operator II as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities 

  • Knowledge of and skill in the use of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the installation, testing and repair of water meters.
  • Knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Water Division and of the operation of the municipal water distribution system.
  • Ability to supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to handle direct customer contact effectively.
  • Knowledge of plumbing principles and practices.

Physical & Mental Effort/ Environmental & Working Conditions 

  • Must be mobile, able to perform simple manipulative skills and skills requiring gross body coordination, hand eye coordination, and arm hand steadiness. For example, sweeping, shifting
  • gears on a vehicle, calibrating tools and equipment.
  • Must be able sit or stand or remain in uncomfortable positions for long periods; may lift, push, pick up and/or carry objects or equipment weighing 50 to 150 pounds.
  • Must be able to see objects far away, close up, and discriminate colors. Able to hear normal sounds with some background noise, distinguish voice patterns, and communicate through human speech.
  • May be exposed to: chemical hazardous waste materials; blood, other body fluids and tissues; seasonal outdoor weather conditions; high, low and fluctuating temperatures; high humidity or wetness; loud or unpleasant noises; bodily injuries.

Minimum Training & Experience 

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of experience in the maintenance, installation, testing and repair of water meters or three (3) years of closely related experience.
  • Must hold valid Commercial Driver's License with air brake endorsement.
