CREW CHIEF - CONSTRUCTION & REHABILITATION - Public Services - Construction & Rehabilitation
JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, lead and work with crew or crews engaged in the construction and reconstruction of the water distribution system, streets, alleys, and drainage systems or wastewater collection system. Perform other related work as required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Supervise and evaluate a crew or crews of subordinates. Assist in training and disciplining of subordinates. Participate in construction and reconstruction of water distribution, wastewater collection, streets, alleys, and drainage systems. Install large diameter water meters and two-way clean-outs. Build manholes. Assist in televising of new water and sewer mains for acceptance of new additions. Maintain water and sewer main creek crossings. Assure that necessary materials, tools and equipment are taken to the work site in an efficient and orderly manner. Assure that tools and equipment are maintained in good and safe working condition. Train crew to skillfully and safely operate hand tools including hand saws, skill saws, drills, vibrators, bolt cutters, picks, axes, air compressors, jackhammers, cutting torch, and various weight hammers. Make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment. Supervise operation of equipment used on construction and rehabilitation jobs. Sort various materials. Make daily reports; write reports by hand as needed. Read, understand, and follow written and oral job instructions. Communicate courteously and effectively with other city employees, officials, and the public. Enforce safety precautions; assure crews implement them. Use good judgment to work safely and use equipment properly. Hear clearly when working around equipment and in traffic, using proper safety precautions. Lift and carry up to 100 pounds; pull, push and/or drag up to 150 pounds of construction equipment. Kneel, squat, twist, and/or stoop for extended periods of time while supervising or participating in construction or reconstruction. Work in trenches and confined spaces, using proper safety precautions. Work indoors and outdoors in extreme temperatures, including heat, cold, temperature swings, and in inclement weather. Some exposure to noise, odor, dust, mechanical, electrical, explosive, chemical and toxic waste hazards, using proper safety precautions. Locate supply sources for material and parts required to construct, reconstruct and maintain the water distribution, wastewater collection, streets, alleys, and drainage systems. Subject to after hours call out for emergencies.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
Pick up trash. Keep storage areas clean and orderly and in safe condition.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, DEGREES, CERTIFICATES, AND/OR LICENSES:
High School Diploma or GED is required. Texas Commercial Driver's License, Class A, is required or must be obtained within 6 months. Must have and maintain a Class II Wastewater and Class C Water Distribution License or must be obtained within one year of hire.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS:
One year of experience required in construction or maintenance of water distribution, wastewater collection, street, alley, and drainage systems. Experience required in supervising the work of one or more crews. Experience required in interpreting drawings, plans and specifications. Must be able to follow oral and written directions. Knowledge and experience required operating calculators, grade laser beam, leveling instruments, setting and following grade stakes. Knowledge required of: materials, equipment, and safe methods employed in water, sewer main, streets, alleys, and drainage construction or reconstruction; trench preparation, construction of manholes, clean-outs, water or sewer main creek crossings; functions of a closed circuit television camera and related equipment; record keeping; zone signing and barricading procedures in traffic zones as mandated by the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
