This position performs technical duties in support of the operation and maintenance of the county's water distribution system. This job is a safety sensitive position that will require a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with Barrow County Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace.
  • Responds to customer service requests.
  • Locates water lines and mains.
  • Operate SCADA equipment.
  • Disconnects water services as directed.
  • Turns water services on as directed.
  • Collects water samples to check chlorine levels.
  • Repairs water lines and mains.
  • Installs and repairs water meters.
  • Operates a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Operates a track hoe, dump truck, excavator and other equipment.
  • Reads and rechecks water meters.
  • Flushes and maintains fire hydrants.
  • Conducts pressure tests and flow tests.
  • Performs related duties.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • One to two year of related water field technician experience.
  • Water distribution certificate preferred.
  • Valid driver's license.
Physical Requirements:
  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light objects, climbs ladders, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc

Knowledge & Skills:
  • Knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, and procedures used in the installation, repair, and maintenance of a water distribution system.
  • Knowledge of county and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of water sampling principles and practices.
  • Skill in the use of a variety of job-related equipment and tools.
  • Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
  • Skill in the collection of water samples.
