Overview
The Floor Care Specialist is responsible for coordinating and completing all carpet and hard surface care assignments, directing floor care activities, and performing other project tasks as assigned by department leadership in accordance with departmental and Infection Prevention and Control policies and procedures. The Floor Care Specialist also assists department leadership in conducting department-certified training for Floor Care Specialists and HK II nominees/applicants.

Qualifications
Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Licensure/Certification/Registry:
  • Certified Health Care Environmental Services Technician (CHEST) preferred.

Experience:
  • Minimum of 2 years of floor care experience, including running floor machines, stripping floors, shower scrubbing, bonnet buffing, extracting, and carpet spotting.
  • Floor care experience in a healthcare setting preferred.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
  • Able to work effectively and efficiently with limited supervision.
  • Strong multi-tasking and prioritization skills.
  • Able to lift objects and climb ladders; role requires moderate to heavy physical effort.
  • Proficient in operating all floor care equipment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in hospital housekeeping duties.

Responsibilities
Cleaning Knowledge and Techniques
  • Understands how soiling occurs and the difference between soluble and insoluble soil and what occurs during the cleaning process.
  • Understands the specific use of all housekeeping chemicals and their dilution rates.
  • Proficient in identifying all flooring and fabric types typically used in a healthcare setting and assessing their condition.

Floor Care and Surface Cleaning
  • Performs hard surface floor dust mopping and wet/microfiber mopping.
  • Performs shower scrubbing, stripping, and refinishing of all hard floor surfaces.
  • Performs carpet care including spotting, bonnet buffing (shampooing), and extraction.
  • Vacuums carpeted surfaces with an upright vacuum cleaner.
  • Operates all departmental floor care equipment (upright vacuums, battery-operated vacuums, conventional floor machines, electric burnishers, auto-burnishers, auto-scrubbers, finish applicators, wet/dry vacuums, etc.).
  • Utilizes Tru-D ultraviolet light device and is certified to train other staff in its use.

Patient Room and Facility Cleaning
  • Cleans all in-patient rooms daily and performs discharge/transfer cleaning procedures.
  • Performs isolation cleaning and precaution procedures using appropriate PPE.
  • Cleans between cases and terminal cleaning in in-patient and out-patient special procedure areas.
  • Cleans laboratory areas, pharmacy clean (IV) room, stairways, elevators, offices, conference rooms, furniture, and public/non-public restrooms and locker rooms.
  • Cleans intravenous pumps (IV or Sigma Smart Pumps).

Waste Management and Safety
  • Handles and disposes of all waste streams, including regulated waste; operates the autoclave in the absence of the recycling/waste coordinator.
  • Cleans up hazardous material spills as required by leadership.
  • Follows departmental safety procedures with chemicals and equipment use; reports any discrepancies.
  • Reports any injuries observed or obtained to department leadership and submits injury reports as required.

Equipment and Maintenance
  • Maintains all cleaning equipment (carts, vacuums, pagers, etc.) per departmental guidelines.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs on departmental equipment.
  • Operates commercial laundry equipment and is certified to train other staff in its use.

Training and Leadership Assistance
  • Assists leadership with department-certified training of Floor Care Specialists and HK II nominees/applicants.
  • Assists and/or covers for the department Labor Technician with furniture moves and set-ups.
  • Coordinates and delegates daily scheduled project work in the absence of leadership.
  • Assists leadership with scheduling project work and informs leadership of current and future supply needs.

Administrative and Compliance Duties
  • Keeps cleaning/project carts and housekeeping closets clean, stocked, and organized per department policy.
  • Reports facility repair issues (wall patching, painting, ceiling tile replacement, leaking fixtures, burnt-out lights, etc.) to leadership or submits appropriate work orders.
  • Follows and monitors all departmental policies, procedures, and communication boards.
  • Completes all required trainings, meetings, and annual computer-based learning modules within designated timeframes.
  • Performs all duties proficiently and within designated timeframes.
  • Performs other related work as required or requested.

Customer Service
  • Performs A.I.D.E.T. (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank you) and Greet and Feet techniques per policy and understands their impact on third-party patient survey processes.
