What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a VP Spice Modeling Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a VP Spice Modeling Engineer, you need deep expertise in semiconductor device physics, circuit simulation, and advanced SPICE modeling, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Proficiency with EDA tools like Cadence, Synopsys, or Mentor Graphics, along with experience in model development and validation, is essential. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help drive cross-functional collaboration and innovation in modeling projects. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring accurate device models, enabling efficient chip design, and maintaining competitiveness in the semiconductor industry.

How does a VP Spice Modeling Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during the development cycle?

As a VP Spice Modeling Engineer, collaboration with cross-functional teams is vital throughout the development cycle. You will regularly interface with analog and mixed-signal circuit designers, device characterization engineers, and CAD tool developers to ensure accurate and efficient SPICE models are developed and validated. This role often involves translating device physics and characterization data into models, providing feedback to process engineers, and supporting design teams in troubleshooting simulation issues. Effective communication and a collaborative mindset are crucial to align modeling efforts with project timelines and design requirements.

What is a VP Spice Modeling Engineer?

A VP Spice Modeling Engineer is a senior-level professional responsible for developing, validating, and maintaining SPICE (Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis) models for semiconductor devices. These models are essential for accurately simulating the behavior of electronic components such as transistors and integrated circuits during circuit design and verification. As a Vice President, this engineer also leads teams, sets modeling strategies, collaborates with other engineering groups, and ensures that modeling methodologies meet industry standards. Their expertise supports the development of reliable, high-performance semiconductor products.

What is the difference between Vp Spice Modeling Engineer vs RF Circuit Design Engineer?

AspectVp Spice Modeling EngineerRF Circuit Design Engineer
Primary FocusDeveloping and validating SPICE models for integrated circuitsDesigning RF circuits like amplifiers and filters
Required SkillsSPICE simulation, circuit modeling, semiconductor physicsRF design, electromagnetic analysis, circuit simulation
Work EnvironmentSemiconductor companies, EDA tool developmentTelecom, wireless device manufacturers, research labs

While both roles involve circuit simulation and require knowledge of electronic components, the Vp Spice Modeling Engineer specializes in creating accurate SPICE models for ICs, whereas the RF Circuit Design Engineer focuses on designing RF circuits for communication systems. The roles often overlap in skills like circuit simulation but differ in their core objectives and application areas.

Job description

For over four decades, Cirrus Logic has been propelled by the top engineers in mixed-signal processing. Our rockstar team thrives on solving complex challenges with innovative end-user solutions for the world's top consumer brands. Cirrus Logic is also known for its award-winning culture, which was built on a foundation of inclusion and fairness, meaningful community engagement, and delivering enjoyable employee experiences at every turn. But we couldn't do it without our extraordinary workforce - and that's where you come in. Join our team and help us continue to make Cirrus Logic an exceptional place to grow your career!
The Role:
We're looking for a high-caliber engineer with deep expertise in device characterization, test-chip design, SPICE modeling, and device-level reliability. In this role, you'll take ownership of device lab operations, ensuring equipment is optimized and running flawlessly. You'll perform a broad range of silicon device characterization, extract accurate SPICE and aging models, and help shape the foundation of our next-generation semiconductor technologies.
If you thrive at the intersection of hands-on lab work, modeling, and silicon physics, this is your opportunity to make a direct impact on device performance and long-term reliability.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline, or a Master's degree with 3+ years of relevant experience working in semiconductor device modeling and characterization.
  • Strong foundational knowledge of semiconductor device physics, especially as it relates to compact modeling across various device types.
  • Proven hands-on experience performing deep-submicron CMOS and BCD device measurements, including use of parametric analyzers, LCR meters, and other precision instrumentation.
  • Skilled in operating manual, semi-automatic, and fully automatic probers for device-level test and characterization.
  • Familiarity with both active and passive device structures in CMOS and BCD process technologies.
  • Solid understanding of device noise, mismatch behavior, and how these impact circuit-level performance.
  • Knowledge of the physics of device aging and long-term reliability mechanisms.
  • Experience designing test structures (individual devices and arrays) for silicon characterization.
  • Demonstrated expertise in SPICE model generation, validation, and QA flows.
  • Excellent verbal communication and technical writing skills, with the ability to clearly document results, methodologies, and model behavior.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:
  • Ability to stress-test devices to evaluate post-stress behavior and safe-operating-area (SOA) limits.
  • Prior exposure to digital and analog design flows and broader design methodologies.
  • Experience running simulations in Cadence ADE.
  • Knowledge of test-structure layout across multiple technology nodes, including advanced CMOS and BCD/HV for analog and mixed-signal products.
  • Strong coding ability in Python, Perl, or similar scripting languages to support analysis and automation.

Benefits That Put You First
At Cirrus Logic, we're deeply committed to the health, happiness, and long-term well-being of our employees and their families. Our benefits are designed to support your life both inside and outside the office-because when you thrive, we all do.
