Volunteer Script Reader information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Volunteer Script Reader, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Volunteer Script Reader, you need strong analytical reading abilities, familiarity with story structure, and a solid understanding of screenplay formatting, often supported by coursework or practical experience in film or theatre. Proficiency with script coverage templates, screenwriting software (such as Final Draft or Celtx), and basic office tools is common. Exceptional written communication, attention to detail, and the ability to provide constructive, objective feedback help set individuals apart in this role. These skills are crucial for providing clear, actionable insights that assist organizations or writers in identifying promising scripts and making informed decisions.

What are some common challenges faced by volunteer script readers and how can they be managed?

Volunteer script readers often face the challenge of managing a high volume of scripts while maintaining consistent, objective feedback. Balancing time commitments with other responsibilities can also be demanding, especially with tight deadlines. To manage these challenges, it's important to develop efficient note-taking systems, set realistic reading goals, and communicate openly with coordinators about workload. Collaborating with fellow readers in discussion sessions can also help clarify opinions and improve feedback quality.

Job description

Black to the Future Action Fund is a 501(c)(4) that works to transform Black communities into constituencies that build independent, progressive Black political power in cities and states, enacting policy that improves the lives of Black people so that Black people have what all people deserve - dignity, safety, and power. This is a shared position with its sister organization, Black Futures Lab, a 501(c)(3) that transforms Black communities into constituencies that wield independent political power at the municipal, state, and federal levels.

The problems Black communities face are complex, and the solutions require imagination, experimentation, and political power. Together, we combine strategies that help us imagine the alternatives we deserve with the organizing that builds the power to make them real.

The Voter Outreach Team Lead leads a team of up to five Election Impact Organizers - social justice advocates who inform and mobilize voters through door-to-door canvassing, phone and text banking, social media, and community events. Our goal is to impact the 2026 General Election by engaging Black voters on the issues that matter most to them and energizing them to head to the polls. This role reports directly to the Senior Manager of Elections Campaigns.

What You'll Do:

  • Lead and support a team of up to five Election Impact Organizers in daily voter outreach
  • Build relationships with community leaders through one-on-one and small-group meetings, sharing the team's purpose and goals
  • Canvass alongside your team - door-to-door outreach, phone and text banking, social media posts, and community events and meetings
  • Train and support volunteers
  • Enter voter data accurately into MiniVAN and complete accurate daily reports
  • Help your team meet its voter-contact goals each shift
  • Follow the provided script and share accurate information with residents
  • Stay informed about the political issues relevant to the campaign

This job description is not intended to be a comprehensive list of all duties, responsibilities, or activities, which may change at any time with or without notice.

Requirements

What We're Looking For:

  • Experience leading or coordinating a team, with comfort giving and receiving performance feedback
  • Ability to train and support volunteers
  • Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills, with a positive, enthusiastic approach to engaging Black voters across a range of social and economic backgrounds
  • Reliability and follow-through - arriving on time and prepared at staging locations, events, and meetings, and helping your team do the same
  • Comfort using a smartphone, web browser, and the MiniVAN app to record voter responses, send texts, make calls, and submit social media posts (a personal smartphone compatible with MiniVAN, able to send texts and take photos, is required)
  • Ability to read a map and follow an assigned route, including across rural roads and turf
  • Flexibility and adaptability as the needs of the Election Impact Team change
  • Willingness to attend mandatory orientation and all trainings

Helpful, but not required:

  • Previous experience with a campaign, community organization, sales, or customer service
  • Existing relationships with local community groups and organizations
  • Bilingual English-Spanish or English-Haitian Creole

Physical Requirements:

  • This role can be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Door-to-door canvassing involves covering assigned turf that can span several miles per shift, often with homes spread far apart and across uneven terrain or roads without sidewalks
  • Standing and walking for up to about 4 hours per shift in varying weather, and carrying up to 10 pounds
  • Phone and text banking involves working through call and text lists using a provided script

Travel:

  • Team Leads are responsible for getting themselves to assigned staging locations and turf. A valid driver's license and access to an insured vehicle during working hours is required.
  • If you choose to use a personal vehicle and would like mileage reimbursement, a valid driver's license and proof of insurance are required, and reimbursement is provided at the federal mileage rate.

Position Type and Compensation:

  • Part-time, temporary, non-exempt (hourly)
  • Estimated late August through early November
  • Up to 25 hours per week
  • $25.00 per hour
  • Mileage reimbursement available at the federal mileage rate for approved personal-vehicle use

Equal Employment Opportunity:

Black Futures Lab and Black to the Future Action Fund are committed to providing equal employment opportunities and supporting an inclusive environment for all applicants. If you require reasonable accommodations during the application or interview process, please reach out to us at people@blackfutureslab.org. We are here to ensure that all applicants can participate fully and fairly in our hiring process.

How to Apply:
