Volunteer Robotics Engineer information

What is a volunteer robotics engineer?

Volunteer Robotics Engineers are individuals who offer their engineering skills and knowledge to design, build, or program robots without monetary compensation. They often contribute to educational programs, non-profit organizations, or community projects, helping to advance robotics initiatives and mentor others. These volunteers may work on tasks such as developing robotic prototypes, teaching robotics to students, or supporting robotics competitions. Their work helps promote STEM education and increases access to robotics technology for a broader audience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a volunteer robotics engineer?

To thrive as a Volunteer Robotics Engineer, a solid understanding of robotics fundamentals, programming (such as Python or C++), and basic electronics is typically required, often supported by a degree or coursework in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with robotics platforms (e.g., Arduino, Raspberry Pi), simulation software (like ROS), and version control systems (such as Git) is commonly needed. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating on projects and sharing knowledge. These skills enable volunteers to contribute meaningful solutions, support educational or community initiatives, and ensure successful project outcomes.

What are some common challenges faced by volunteer robotics engineers, and how can they overcome them?

Volunteer robotics engineers often work with limited resources, including time, funding, and equipment, which can make it challenging to build and test prototypes. They may also collaborate with diverse teams who have varying levels of technical expertise. Overcoming these challenges typically involves strong communication, creative problem-solving, and effective project management. Many successful volunteers focus on clear goal-setting and leverage open-source tools and community knowledge to maximize their impact.

What is the difference between Volunteer Robotics Engineer vs Robotics Technician?

Job description

About Mytra:
We're creating an entirely new way to solve the most ubiquitous problem in industry - moving and storing material. We're applying robotics and distributed software to create a new class of product for this $1T market. We're focused on the supply chain industry first. The industry is in a massive bind with the continued growth of e-commerce, sharp rise in costs, and supply chain disruptions. What has been a "sleepy" industry for decades is now at the epicenter of sustaining the global economy.
About the role
As a Deployment Engineer at Mytra, you will join our Customer Operations team during a period of high growth. Mytra is moving from prototype builds to repeatable customer deployments, and we need a hands-on field operator who can execute commissioning work with discipline, document objective evidence, and escalate issues before they become customer-impacting misses.
The Deployment Engineer owns defined commissioning work packages such as infrastructure preflight, safety bring-up support, robot integration checks, and construction QC. Working collaboratively with the Senior Deployment Engineer, who provides day-to-day field direction, you will execute against the commissioning gates and quality standards defined by the Deployment Lead and enforced by the site team.
Customer interaction is regular and on-site. You'll be at the customer facility and expected to represent Mytra professionally, answer questions as needed, and communicate clearly in the moment. Day-to-day, your primary working interfaces are trade contractors and the site team; what matters most is execution discipline, artifact quality, and fast, clear escalation when something is off.
This role is designed to grow into ownership of a full commissioning subsystem - such as infrastructure readiness, safety bring-up, robot integration, or ops station readiness - based on demonstrated execution discipline, artifact quality, and field judgment.
What you'll do:
  • Execute commissioning readiness work packages, including network/compute preflight, ops station bring-up, robot integration checks, and safety prerequisite validation
  • Produce construction QC evidence before commissioning starts, including photos, measurements, inspection checklists, and documented as-built deltas
  • Deliver high-quality deployment artifacts for closeout and sustainment handoff, including commissioning readiness records, SAT evidence, installed-base manifests, and open-issue trackers
  • Escalate issues with clear context: root cause hypothesis, objective evidence, affected work streams, and recommended next actions. See solutions through resolution.

Ideal Candidates
  • 3+ years of industry experience.
  • Onsite deployment or commissioning experience in industrial, automation, robotics, or similar environments
  • Hands-on electro-mechanical hardware experience: wiring, connectors, electrical troubleshooting, working around powered equipment
  • Executes with discipline from defined work packages: follows checklists precisely, documents evidence completely, and holds quality standards under schedule pressure
  • Demonstrated safety discipline in live build environments; can identify and respect hazards in partially energized systems
  • Clear cross-functional communication: flags blockers concisely, escalates with context, and closes the loop across contractors and the site team

Nice to have:
  • Network/IT infrastructure basics: DHCP, Wi-Fi, compute bring-up
  • Safety systems familiarity: machine guarding, E-stop circuits
  • Industrial controls and electrical panel assembly
  • Ability to read electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and construction blueprints; comfort with metric/imperial tolerances
  • Familiarity with forklift certification and comfort around heavy equipment
  • Spanish/English bilingual communication skills

A Final Note:
If this role excites you, we encourage you to apply - even if you don't check every box. At Mytra, we build bots, but we hire humans. We value thoughtful challengers who communicate with clarity and respect, and we're lifelong learners committed to getting better every day. We move fast, learn faster, and show up for each other under pressure. The best outcomes come from diverse perspectives working together to build something meaningful and built to last
Benefits Include:
  • Competitive compensation and equity grants at a high-growth company backed by top-tier VCs
  • Fully subsidized health coverage, including medical (baseline plans), dental, and vision for employees and dependents
  • 401(k) plans and employer-subsidized life insurance
  • Fully subsidized lunch and snacks at HQ-we eat and share stories together at the "long" table
  • Generous PTO and company-paid holidays, including one week over the winter break so everyone can recharge together
  • Voluntary pet insurance, Voluntary Life Insurance, Accident, Critical Illness, and Hospital Indemnity
  • Fully subsidized tax advisory services and education to help you understand your equity
  • Commuter benefits, including a up to $150 monthly commuter benefit
  • Lively, modern combined office and lab space where we rapidly iterate through design, build, and test phases
  • Fully equipped onsite gym and showers at headquarters

The pay range for this role is:
100,000 - 110,000 USD per year (Mytra, Inc.)
