Job description

Position Summary:

Carver Companies is looking for a capable Software Engineer to bring order to the many systems and needs of the organization. The core responsibility of this position is taking the lead on software solutions for our organizational challenges, through both external and internally provided tools. This role starts with understanding our existing vendor supplied systems and extends into designing, building, and maintaining new integrations, internal websites and tools that help our teams work more efficiently.

Based out of our Albany HQ, you'll work closely with stakeholders across the business to understand their needs and turn them into reliable, well-crafted solutions and software. You will write integrations between our external vendor SaaS applications and create custom data warehouses for business analytics.

You will join a tight-knit team with diverse skillsets and areas of responsibility. You will lead the development and automation efforts, setting standards and cross training the team. Additionally, you will be cross trained in cybersecurity, IT operations and support to ensure critical infrastructure and end users technology needs are met in a timely and efficient manner.

This position may require approximately 15% travel, domestic US and Canada. The position is primarily office based but the candidate must be comfortable working in industrial and maritime environments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Closely collaborate with business stakeholders to understand their needs, opportunities for improvement and pain points with processes and systems.
  • Act as subject matter expert on existing system capabilities and operation.
  • Identify and analyze solutions, guiding the organization on the effort, cost and risk for off the shelf, third party custom development, or internal development.
  • Establish formal development arm of Carver IT from the ground up. You will set conventions, standards and procedures.
  • Build and maintain internal web applications, dashboards, software integrations, automations and productivity tools.
  • Develop robust ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes to migrate data between diverse sources into our technology stack.
  • Implement data validation and quality checks to ensure accuracy and consistency.
  • Create and maintain detailed documentation for systems architecture, configurations, and procedures.
  • Lead or support technology implementation projects, ensuring timelines and goals are met.
  • Write clean, well-documented code and internal facing websites. Use REST APIs to integrate internal tools with existing systems and data sources.
  • Deploy and manage applications on Azure, including cloud hosting, storage, and related services.
  • Manage source code, branching, and releases using GitHub.
  • Take ownership of existing BASE44 application prototypes, assess the risks and determine the requirements for long term support and stability.
  • Evaluate and provide end user guidance on AI tools such as Claude and ChatGPT to empower employee productivity.
  • Participate in cybersecurity incident response, information security compliance and certification.
  • Assist in IT Backup Disaster Recovery planning, testing and documentation.
  • May require participation in after-hours or on-call support for critical systems.
  • Additional duties as assigned by the IT Director.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • 2+ years of experience in development.
  • Proficiency in Python for backend development and scripting.
  • Experience using REST APIs to Export, Transform and Load data between systems.
  • Hands-on experience with Azure (App Services, storage, or similar).
  • Familiarity with Docker for containerization and deployment.
  • Experience deploying web apps via IIS on Windows Server, Azure Web Services or Base44.
  • Version control with GitHub, including branching strategies and pull requests.
  • Scripting skills (e.g., PowerShell, Bash) for automation.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex issues.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Preferred Experience:
  • Solid understanding of information security principles and practices.
  • Relevant certifications.
  • Practical experience integrating AI/LLM APIs (e.g. OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, Anthropic) into applications.
  • Familiarity with Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions for CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience with authentication/SSO systems (OAuth, SAML, LDAP).
  • Strong understanding of Windows and/or Linux server environments.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to sit, stand, and work at a computer for extended periods.
