Job description

Volunteer Hospice Patient Companion (Unpaid)
Leave a legacy of kindness. Make a profound difference in your community by supporting neighbors during their final stages of life. As a Patient Care Volunteer, you aren't just providing a service-you are providing humanity, dignity, and friendship when it is needed most.
Hospice care supports patients and families during the final phase of life. We are looking for empathetic individuals who have the heart to "show up" for others. This role offers a unique opportunity to connect with people from all walks of life, deepening your own emotional and spiritual perspective while serving as a vital member of our care team.
The Impact You'll Make
As a volunteer, you will act as a friend and companion to patients with a terminal diagnosis (six months or less to live). You will provide essential emotional support and companionship, as well as much-needed "respite" (a short break) for family caregivers.
Location: Visits take place in the patient's home, assisted living facilities, or nursing homes within your local area.
Your Responsibilities
  • Companionship: Engage in active listening, bedside sitting, or simple conversation.
  • Shared Activities: Connect through hobbies such as reading, watching movies, playing cards, discussing life stories, or listening to music.
  • Caregiver Support: Provide 2-4 hour blocks of "respite care," allowing family members to run errands, rest, or take a break.
  • Documentation & Ethics: Maintain strict confidentiality regarding patient and family information.
  • We value the unique talents you bring; we will tailor your specific volunteer responsibilities to align with your personal abilities, comfort level, and schedule availability.
Qualifications
  • Character: Compassionate, reliable, punctual, and an excellent listener.
  • Age: Must be 18 years or older.
  • Requirements: Must have a valid driver's license and reliable auto insurance.
  • Screening: Ability to pass a comprehensive background check and drug test.
  • Commitment: * Complete a minimum of 10 hours of volunteering within the first 90 days.
    • Commit to a minimum of 6 months of total volunteer service.
  • Bonus: Bilingual skills are a plus!
Training & Support
You are never alone in this journey. All volunteers receive:
  • Comprehensive Training: We prepare you fully for the emotional and practical aspects of hospice visiting.
  • Ongoing Mentorship: Continuous, guided support from our Volunteer Coordinator.

Note: This is an unpaid volunteer position. It is ideal for those looking to give back to their community, students in healthcare or social work fields, or retirees looking for meaningful engagement.
