What is a volunteer graphic designer?

Volunteer Graphic Designers are creative professionals who offer their graphic design skills and services without financial compensation, usually to support nonprofit organizations, charities, or community projects. They help with designing logos, promotional materials, social media graphics, and other visual content that helps organizations communicate more effectively. By volunteering, they contribute to important causes and can also gain experience, build their portfolios, and expand their professional networks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a volunteer graphic designer?

To thrive as a Volunteer Graphic Designer, you need a solid understanding of design principles, proficiency in using graphic design software like Adobe Creative Suite, and a relevant portfolio showcasing your work. Familiarity with tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and Canva is typically expected, and knowledge of web design systems like WordPress can be beneficial. Creativity, strong communication, and the ability to collaborate with diverse teams are essential soft skills for this role. These skills ensure that design projects effectively communicate organizational messages, enhance brand identity, and support the mission of nonprofit or community-focused groups.

What are some common challenges volunteer graphic designers face when working with non-profit organizations?

Volunteer Graphic Designers often encounter challenges such as limited resources, tight deadlines, and varying levels of design knowledge among team members. Communication can be key, as project briefs may evolve based on stakeholder feedback. Flexibility and adaptability are important, as you may need to balance professional design standards with the organization's existing brand guidelines and constraints. Despite these challenges, the role provides valuable experience and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact.

You'll be embedded within the Communications Branch, collaborating closely with the Social Media Director and Web Designers to support ongoing storytelling and campaign needs. The ideal candidate has a strong grasp of layout, branding, and typography, and can take both direction and initiative.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the Web Design team with visual assets for new modules, pages, or microsites
  • Create infographics and data visualisations for reports and thought leadership
  • Maintain brand consistency across all content in accordance with the BCI brand manual
  • Adapt visuals for different platforms and formats (e.g., accessibility, aspect ratios, languages)
  • Organise and maintain a shared asset library for communications use

Requirements
Experience and Skills
  • Strong portfolio of visual design work (brand application, campaigns, layouts, infographics)
  • Experience working in nonprofit, advocacy, or policy-related design environments
  • Ability to synthesise complex topics into clean, engaging visuals
  • Familiarity with accessibility best practices for digital content
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to juggle multiple requests
  • Comfortable receiving and giving feedback in a collaborative setting

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) or Figma
  • Experience with Canva Pro or other quick-turn design tools
  • Familiarity with project coordination tools like Trello
  • Light animation or motion graphics experience is a plus
  • Basic understanding of WordPress asset integration is helpful but not required

  • Knowledge of WIX is considered a necessity

Benefits
What You'll Gain
  • A portfolio of work tied to global policy, innovation, and climate action
  • Creative ownership within a respected climate-tech nonprofit
  • Mentorship and collaboration with communications leads and international teams
  • The opportunity to help shape the visual language of BCI's public presence
