What is a volunteer computer science internship?

A Volunteer Computer Science Internship is an unpaid program where individuals, often students or recent graduates, gain practical experience in computer science by contributing their skills to organizations, non-profits, or community projects. Interns typically work on software development, coding, IT support, or data analysis tasks under the supervision of professionals. This type of internship helps participants build their technical skills, expand their professional network, and enhance their resumes, all while supporting a cause or organization in need. Volunteer internships can be part-time or full-time and may be completed remotely or on-site, depending on the organization's needs.

What types of projects do volunteer computer science interns typically work on, and how much guidance can I expect?

Volunteer Computer Science Interns often contribute to real-world projects such as developing websites, improving nonprofit software tools, or assisting with data analysis and automation tasks. You can generally expect to work closely with a small team or directly under a lead developer, receiving mentorship and feedback throughout your internship. While some tasks may require independent problem-solving, most organizations provide clear project goals, regular check-ins, and opportunities to ask questions. This structure helps interns learn new technologies while making a meaningful impact.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a volunteer computer science intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Volunteer Computer Science Intern, you need a strong foundation in programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), basic computer science principles, and often current enrollment in a relevant degree program. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, collaborative platforms such as GitHub, and exposure to common development environments are typically expected. Strong problem-solving skills, willingness to learn, and effective communication make an intern stand out in team-based or project-driven settings. These abilities enable you to contribute meaningfully, adapt to real-world projects, and maximize both your learning and your impact within the organization.

As an intern at Boeing, you'll gain hands-on experience, learn from experts, and collaborate with teams that do truly amazing things.

Over the course of our 10-12 week internship experience you will have the opportunity to:

  • Experience our products up close by touring our state-of-the-art manufacturing and research facilities

  • Interact directly with our company leaders to discuss strategy and the future of Boeing

  • Build a lasting professional network through social events and engaging activities

  • Gain the skills and knowledge to become a future leader in the aerospace industry

Methods Process Analyst

  • As an intern for our Methods Process Analyst organization (under the Industrial Engineering Job Family), you will be responsible for supporting a production team or organization directly integrated with the Boeing Production System. You will be integrated into a small team between 5-10 people, including a team lead, who will help guide you on your statement of work throughout your internship. There will be frequent milestone check-ins with your team lead and manager on progress, but a successful internship is dependent on your time and project management skills and willingness to work with all support functions to find ways to reduce risks and improve safety, quality, cost and flow.

  • You will be assigned to a team where you may reduce or eliminate safety and ergonomic issues, improve quality defects trends, analyzing performance to daily schedules or orders, and reduce non-value added work. Our Methods Process Analysts are responsible for creating and maintaining the plans, which include operating plans (flows and positioning), developing scenario plans, and assessing readiness to execute, and building disruption recovery plans to get back to baseline while mitigating impacts to the downstream work statement and major milestones. You will be working in either a factory or on the flightline, which means your time will be split between an office and production environment, and you will be required to adhere to the PPE requirements for the work area.

  • As part of our Internship program, we host interns across Washington State, reporting to different IE teams that support Airplane Programs, Fabrication, Fulfillment, Supply Chain, Product Development, Tooling and more! During the pre-onboarding process, you'll have an opportunity to review programs and work locations within the greater Seattle area and matched based on your current skills, desired internship outcomes, and business needs. Additionally through the pre-onboarding process (November - April), our hiring teams will host informational sessions, allowing the incoming intern to learn more about the company, the intern program and get the chance for an early start networking with the other incoming interns.

  • In addition, our renowned Intern Program host several events enabling you to network with other interns, including intern team-building activities, mentoring mixers with technical and executive leaders, facility tours, and access to a network of peers and managers to help guide you technically and professionally in your career.
