Job description

POSITION TITLE: Internship

PURPOSE/GOAL:

To support the Fitness Director/Wellness Coordinator in promoting wellness events, exercise classes and healthy lifestyles and options for members.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Should be passionate about healthy lifestyle principles and connecting others to opportunities to improve overall health. Must be at least 18 years of age.

TIME COMMITMENT:

Minimum of one hour per week, as needed.

POSITION EXPECTATIONS:

  • Seize opportunities to promote wellness events and activities to community and Y members.
  • Hand out flyers, make phone calls and/or engage in face-to-face discussions about the variety of options (seminars, orientations, classes, personal training, special events, etc...) for members to reach their wellness goals.
  • Attend special events and classes to welcome, greet and further connect members and participants.

END RESULT:

  • Members are more aware and involved in the variety of wellness programs and events.
  • Retention is increased through greater relationship building and deeper involvement for members.

VOLUNTEER RIGHTS:

  • To do meaningful and satisfying work.
  • To be carefully assigned to projects which meet your interests and needs.
  • To be oriented to the YMCA and trained appropriately for your work assignments.
  • To receive supervision and guidance throughout your volunteer experience.
  • To have your service hours documented (certificate or letter) upon request and be properly appreciated and recognized for your contributions.

VOLUNTEER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Dress in assigned dress code, including YMCA nametag and YMCA t-shirt, when appropriate.
  • Participate/Volunteer with enthusiasm and commitment.
  • Be open and honest with the YMCA about your expectations and abilities.
  • Participate in orientation process (e.g., background checks, paperwork and training).
  • Fulfill time and task commitments.
  • Remember that you are a representative of the YMCA of Sumter.
  • Create a nurturing and safe environment by reporting suspicious activity that may lead to child abuse or may violate the code of conduct.
