The LIU12 Literacy Council works to support and improve adult basic literacy skills. LIU provides several areas of instruction, including ESL speaking / reading and writing, as well as ABE reading, writing, and arithmetic. LIU also provides computer training and workforce development programs and works with volunteers to set up placement in their area(s) of interest.
Volunteers are not required to be certified teachers and are not required to be bilingual. The most important qualifications for effective volunteers are dependability, empathy, and commitment to helping our students meet their goals.
Currently seeking: tutors (HS diploma required), tutor assistants, administrative volunteers, and fundraising volunteers.
Required Forms to Complete:
  • PA Child Abuse History Clearance
  • PA State Police Criminal Record Check
  • Federal Criminal History Record Check (fingerprint) (use code 1KG6ZJ when registering to be fingerprinted)
  • 916-AR1 Volunteer Request for Waiver of FBI-Federal Criminal History Fingerprint Record Check (if applicable)
  • 916-AR2 Acknowledgment of Volunteer Obligations
  • SE-703 Volunteer Registration Form for LIU Classrooms & Programs
  • SE-704 Volunteer Release of Liability and Indemnity Contract

Volunteers will only be considered after completion of the online application, including uploaded copies of all required clearances and completion of all required forms. PLEASE NOTE: A TB test is NOT required for volunteering with the Adult Education Program.
