Summary
A successful candidate will play an active role in the City of College Park's existing operational success. The purpose of the position is to provide support to athletic activities, have daily contact with the public, and require the ability to interact (internally and externally) in a professional, positive, and tactful manner at all times.
Essential Functions
Independent judgment is required to identify, select and apply the most appropriate of available guidelines and procedures as well as interpret precedents. This position is responsible for designing and implementing basic sports strategies, scheduling team practices and games, and ensuring all team members get equal playing time.
  • Designing and implementing sporting strategies.
  • Working to improve team unity and sportsmanship; teach the young athletes the fundamentals of the sport; and emphasizing skills development including safety, fair play, and sportsmanship.
  • Setting realistic and age-appropriate expectations for team members.
  • Ensuring the safety of the team during practice sessions and games.
  • Plan and supervise games and practices.
  • Inform players/parents about games, practices, events, cancellations, and make-ups.
  • Supervise assistant coaches and team parents.
  • Ensuring proper sideline behavior from team members and parents.
  • Promote the values of responsibility and commitment, and emphasize the importance of academics first and foremost.
  • Encourage the involvement of the parents in the sport as volunteers for ride-sharing, fundraising, etc.
  • Provide a safe and fun environment for the children.
  • Learn and follow ALL association and league rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Give each player adequate playing time with fairness.
  • Put the well-being of players ahead of your desire to win.
  • Attend all association and league meetings, classes, and functions.
  • Assume responsibility for equipment that has been provided by the City of College Park.
  • Attend any required training.
  • Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings.
  • The ability to travel to and from games.
  • Inform the Recreation Leader of any problems.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that logically relate to the position.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Passion for youth development.
  • In-depth knowledge of sporting strategies
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations; Patient and understanding.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
  • Must be able to use tact and courtesy in dealing with the public.
  • Must be able to analyze and evaluate procedures and work processes and to exercise appropriate judgment in establishing priorities and work methods.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships and to deal effectively and courteously with others, to work independently and in team settings.
  • Must be able to type or to use a personal computer with word processing and related software and to enter and retrieve information with reasonable speed and accuracy.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling objects of average-weight up to fifty (100) pounds, standing, sitting, and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous youth coaching or instructional experience is preferred.
  • Complete all required training and obtain coach certification and pay the nominal fee for the same.
  • First Aid and/or CPR certified.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Experience in communicating with diverse communities, and in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, as well as knowledge and understanding of the organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.
  • Extensive hours and weekends will be required at times.
  • Pre-Employment screening is required: criminal background check and drug testing.
