What are some common challenges volatility traders face when managing risk in dynamic markets?

Volatility Traders often contend with rapidly changing market conditions, which can make accurate pricing and hedging of options particularly challenging. Managing risk requires constant monitoring of market volatility, adjusting positions quickly, and using sophisticated models to predict price movements. Additionally, traders must stay informed about macroeconomic events and news that can cause sudden spikes in volatility. Effective communication with risk managers and other trading team members is essential to manage exposures and ensure compliance with firm-wide risk limits.

What is the difference between Volatility Trader vs Options Trader?

AspectVolatility TraderOptions Trader

An Options Trader handles a wider array of options and derivatives, including strategies beyond volatility. The roles overlap in skills and environment but differ in scope and focus.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a volatility trader?

To thrive as a Volatility Trader, you need strong quantitative analysis skills, a deep understanding of financial markets and derivatives, and typically a degree in finance, mathematics, or a related field. Familiarity with trading platforms, programming languages like Python or R, and risk management systems is essential. Exceptional decision-making under pressure, attention to detail, and effective communication are standout soft skills. These abilities are critical for accurately assessing market risk, executing complex strategies, and ensuring profitability in highly dynamic trading environments.

What is a volatility trader?

Volatility traders are financial professionals who specialize in trading instruments that profit from changes in market volatility rather than the direction of price movements. They often use derivatives like options, futures, or volatility indices to take positions based on their forecasts of how much an asset's price will fluctuate. Their strategies may involve complex mathematical models and risk management techniques to hedge or exploit changing market conditions. Volatility traders are commonly found in investment banks, hedge funds, and proprietary trading firms.

Job description

About Nscale

Nscale is the GPU cloud engineered for AI. We provide cost-effective, high-performance infrastructure for AI start-ups and large enterprise customers. Nscale enables AI-focused companies to achieve superior results by reducing the complexity of AI development. Our GPU cloud bolsters technical capabilities and directly supports strategic business outcomes, including cost management, rapid innovation, and environmental responsibility.

We thrive on a culture of relentless innovation, ownership, and accountability, where every team member takes pride in their work and drives it with excellence and urgency. As an Nscaler, you'll build trust through openness and transparency, where everyone is inspired to do their best work. If you join our team, you'll be contributing to building the technology that powers the future.

About the Role

We're hiring a Director, AI Supply and Demand Planning to lead the translation of commercial pipeline signals into infrastructure-ready execution plans.

This role sits at the critical intersection of Sales, Finance, Product Engineering, and Supply Chain โ€” ensuring AI workload configurations, and revenue forecasts are converted into accurate, actionable demand plans. You'll own the global demand forecast of certain core components and ensure alignment between commercial growth and infrastructure deployment capacity. This is a highly strategic and operational role that directly impacts capital allocation and infrastructure scaling decisions.

What You'll Do

Early on, you'll get deep on how demand signals currently flow through the business โ€” helping to improve the existing forecast processes and mapping how commercial pipeline, customer contracts, and AI cluster configurations translate (or fail to translate) into BOM-level demand signals. You'll build relationships with the Sales, Finance, Product Engineering, Supply Chain teams, and external suppliers, and get a clear read on where forecast bias, misalignment, or blind spots exist today.

From there, you'll take ownership of the demand forecast. You'll build and maintain a rolling 18-24 month forecast, modeling demand volatility, ramp curves, and burst scenarios across customer segments. You'll integrate revenue forecasts with infrastructure capacity planning to ensure deployment readiness, align demand outputs with supply chain procurement and build strategies, and lead monthly demand reviews with commercial leadership โ€” surfacing risks and trade-offs tied to infrastructure lead times, capital allocation, and supply availability as they emerge.

Who You Are
  • 10+ years of experience in demand planning, supply chain strategy, commercial operations, or infrastructure capacity planning
  • Experience operating in high-growth technology or infrastructure-heavy environments (AI, cloud, hardware, or similar preferred)
  • Strong understanding of infrastructure components including compute, networking, racks, and power systems
  • Proven ability to translate commercial signals into operational and financial plans
  • Strong financial acumen with experience integrating revenue forecasts into capacity and capital planning
  • Advanced analytical skills with experience modeling demand volatility and scenario planning
  • Exceptional cross-functional leadership skills and executive communication capability
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguity while building scalable planning frameworks from the ground up

The range below reflects the base salary for the position. Actual compensation may vary based on job-related factors such as skill set, experience, education, and location. In addition to base salary, this role may be eligible for bonus, equity, and/or commission programs. Nscale may offer a competitive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, flexible paid time off, parental leave, and retirement plan participation.

Salary Range

$160,000 - $280,000 USD
