Job description

Job Summary:

As a Locate Technician, you will be responsible for accurately identifying and marking underground fiber optic infrastructure in response to Texas 811 One-Call locate requests. This role is critical to preventing damage to network assets during excavation and construction activities. You will work independently in the field under the guidance of Highlines operations management, using specialized equipment and GIS systems to ensure safe and precise locates.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Respond to Texas 811 Requests: Receive and manage daily locate tickets from the Texas 811 system, ensuring timely response and compliance with state regulations.
  • Perform Field Locates: Use electromagnetic locating equipment, maps, and GIS data to identify and mark the location of underground fiber lines with paint and flags.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Accurately document each locate, including photos, GPS coordinates, and ticket status updates. Submit reports through internal systems and Texas 811 portals.
  • Asset Protection: Ensure the integrity of the fiber network by preventing third-party damage through accurate locates and proactive communication with excavators.
  • Investigate breached fiber issues, complete incident reports, facilitate damage claims when fiber has been impacted due to construction issues in the field.
  • Customer & Contractor Interaction: Communicate professionally with contractors, property owners, and internal teams to clarify locate boundaries and resolve issues.
  • Compliance & Safety: Follow all safety protocols, state regulations, and company procedures. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Texas 811 laws and best practices.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Maintain and calibrate locating equipment regularly. Report any malfunctions or needs for replacement.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical training or certifications in utility locating preferred.
  • 1+ years of experience in utility locating, preferably with fiber optic infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with Texas 811 One-Call system and state excavation laws.
  • Proficiency with locating equipment (e.g., Metrotech, Vivax, Radio detection).
  • Ability to read and interpret utility maps, blueprints, and GIS data.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to travel as necessary.
Preferred Skills:
  • Experience with GIS platforms and mobile ticket management apps.
  • Knowledge of underground construction practices.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods working outdoors
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment drug screen (and Random Selections)
  • Must wear Personal Protective Equipment and use safety equipment, as designated
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times
  • May be required to work on-call or long hours in case of network malfunction.
  • Must be able to bend, stretch, kneel, and squat to perform repairs and inspections
