Visual Merchandising Graphic Designer information

What does a visual merchandising graphic designer do?

A Visual Merchandising Graphic Designer creates visual elements and graphics that enhance the appearance and appeal of retail spaces. They design signage, displays, and promotional materials to attract customers and communicate brand messages effectively. Their work bridges the gap between marketing and in-store experience, ensuring that graphics are visually appealing, on-brand, and strategically placed. They often collaborate with marketing teams, merchandisers, and store planners to execute campaigns and seasonal promotions.

How does a visual merchandising graphic designer typically collaborate with store planners and marketing teams?

Visual Merchandising Graphic Designers work closely with store planners to ensure that graphics and signage align with the overall layout and flow of the retail space, enhancing the customer experience. They also collaborate with marketing teams to ensure that all in-store visuals support current campaigns and brand messaging. Regular meetings and feedback sessions are common, allowing for adjustments based on sales data and customer feedback. This collaborative approach ensures consistency and effectiveness across all visual touchpoints in the store.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a visual merchandising graphic designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Visual Merchandising Graphic Designer, you need a strong background in graphic design, visual communication, and an understanding of retail environments, typically supported by a degree in graphic design or a related field. Proficiency in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) and knowledge of print production processes are crucial. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong collaboration skills help designers create compelling displays that align with brand identity and engage customers. These skills ensure visually appealing, effective merchandising solutions that drive customer interest and support retail sales goals.

Senior Graphic Designer - Global Visual Merchandising

Dermalogica sits at the intersection of professional skincare, education, and purposeful design. We are seeking a Senior Graphic Designer to shape how the brand comes to life across global retail environments. This role translates brand and campaign strategy into clear, compelling, production-ready visual systems—from campaign toolkits and retailer adaptations to signage, displays, and store-level experiences.

You will combine strong concept development with disciplined execution, balancing global consistency with the practical needs of local markets. The right candidate understands that great retail design must do more than look beautiful: it must communicate quickly, work within physical constraints, and perform at scale.

What you will do Creative direction and brand stewardship
  • Develop and evolve visual concepts for global retail campaigns, launches, promotions, events, and evergreen programs.
  • Translate brand strategy into cohesive graphic systems that work across signage, displays, fixtures, windows, planograms, presentations, and other retail touchpoints.
  • Establish, interpret, and uphold Dermalogica and retailer-specific design standards across global deliverables.
  • Create scalable global campaign toolkits and provide clear graphic direction so regional teams can execute consistently.
  • Adapt global creative for retailer, format, and local-market requirements without weakening the core idea or brand expression.
  • Act as a trusted resource for questions related to retail graphics, campaign application, and visual standards.
Design development and production
  • Create original layouts, key visuals, mockups, and production artwork for promotional displays, signage, point-of-purchase materials, and in-store environments.
  • Apply strong typography, hierarchy, composition, and color judgment to make complex messages easy to understand in a retail setting.
  • Work confidently with dielines, print specifications, planograms, fixture dimensions, product information, and retailer production requirements.
  • Prepare accurate, print-ready mechanical files; review proofs and samples; and partner with vendors to resolve color, material, and production issues.
  • Source and evaluate stock imagery, retouch assets, and conduct visual research as needed.
  • Design selected corporate communications, including presentation templates, mockups, and print materials, when required.
Collaboration and influence
  • Partner closely with Global Visual Merchandising, Creative, Brand Marketing, regional teams, and retail stakeholders from brief through final execution.
  • Present creative concepts and design rationale clearly, invite productive critique, and turn feedback into stronger solutions.
  • Advise global markets on how to adapt existing assets for regional needs while protecting campaign intent and brand consistency.
  • Contribute actively to creative reviews, project status meetings, and cross-functional planning discussions.
  • Influence through expertise and sound judgment, helping raise the quality and consistency of work across the organization.
Project ownership
  • Manage multiple projects at different stages, establish priorities, and deliver high-quality work against agreed timelines.
  • Maintain organized, accurate, and accessible working files, final artwork, templates, and asset libraries.
  • Identify risks early, clarify missing information, and recommend practical solutions that protect quality, cost, and timing.
  • Carry projects through completion with exceptional attention to detail, including final preflight and production handoff.

This position will be based out of the corporate headquarters in Carson, CA with applicable hybrid in-office work guidelines.

The expected annual base salary range for this position is $85K to $95K.The exact base salary is determined by various factors including experience, skills, education, and budget. This role is eligible for participation in our company bonus plan, rewarding personal performance and company results.
