Summary Under the general supervision of a Specialist, Manager, or Director, the Clinical Laboratory Technologist performs complex clinical laboratory testing across one or more sections of the Pathology Department. This role requires advanced professional knowledge to accurately analyze and interpret test results, including abnormal or atypical findings. Responsibilities include equipment calibration, execution and interpretation of complex testing and associated quality control procedures, and troubleshooting equipment issues.

Employees are expected to model Brown University Health's core values: Compassion Accountability Respect Excellence Additionally, employees are expected to demonstrate the following Success Factors: Instill Trust & Value Differences Patient & Community Focus Collaboration Key Responsibilities Specimen Handling & Processing Receive specimens and verify patient identification Validate physician orders and labeling accuracy Ensure proper handling to prevent contamination Laboratory Testing Perform complex clinical laboratory tests using methods such as: EIA (Enzyme Immunoassay) IFA (Immunofluorescence Assay) Chemiluminescence RIA (Radioimmunoassay) Electrophoresis Immunoassay Colorimetry Monitor testing procedures and parameters Analyze and interpret test results Result Interpretation & Reporting Interpret clinical significance of results Collaborate with colleagues to validate unusual findings Escalate issues to Specialist, Manager, or Director as needed Record and report results to physicians or regulatory agencies Quality Control & Assurance Perform QC checks on equipment and reagents Document and analyze QC results Participate in Quality Assurance and Improvement programs Equipment & Maintenance Calibrate and set up laboratory equipment Troubleshoot operational issues Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs Clean and maintain equipment, instruments, and workspaces Reagents & Inventory Prepare solutions, reagents, and stains per standard procedures Verify expiration dates and properly label materials Maintain laboratory inventory and stock supplies Training & Development Assist in training students, residents, and new hires Support onboarding within assigned lab section Compliance & Safety Adhere to QA, Safety, Infection Control, and HIPAA guidelines Maintain compliance with hospital and departmental policies Additional Duties Perform other related responsibilities as assigned Minimum Qualifications Education Bachelor's degree in: Clinical Laboratory Science Medical Technology Chemistry, Biology, or related field OR equivalent education/experience per CLIA standards Certifications One of the following: National certification (e.g., ASCP or equivalent) in: Medical Laboratory Science Medical Technology Microbiology Chemistry Hematology OR eligibility for certification through: ABHES NAACLS Other HHS-approved programs OR prior qualification under CLIA standards Experience Minimum of 1 year clinical laboratory experience Skills & Abilities Proficiency in operating laboratory equipment and performing tests Strong analytical and interpretation skills Manual dexterity and visual acuity for detailed lab work Ability to stand and work at lab benches for extended periods Knowledge of age-specific patient care considerations Cultural competence in patient care delivery Work Environment & Physical Requirements Exposure to: Infectious materials Chemical toxins Laboratory odors Frequent visual concentration when examining specimens Physical requirements include: Standing for extended periods Lifting and carrying supplies Pay Range $29.53-$48.72 Location The Miriam Hospital - 164 Summit Ave Providence, Rhode Island 02906 Work Type Part time, 3-1130 rotating days Work Shift Evening Daily Hours 8 hours Driving Required No Brown University Health is committed to providing equal employment opportunities and maintaining a work environment free from all forms of unlawful discrimination and harassment.
