Overview

This position reports to the Manager of Language Services and receives operational coordination and direction from the Manager of Language Services or the Assistant Manager of Language Services. Position provides accurate and complete, interpretation of medical information between providers and patients. Candidates adhere to the standards of practice and code of ethics of medical Interpreting.

Responsibilities
  • 1. Facilitates and encourages direct communication between patient and provider by being a conduit and not the focus of communication.
    • 1.1 Displays equal sensitivity to patient and caregiver concerns, interpreting all comments between the two parties
  • 2. Assists with operational functions of Interpreter Program.
    • 2.1 Documents interpreter encounter(s) accurately and in a timely manner in EPIC.
  • 3. Professional development:
    • 3.1 Completes the YNHH Interpreter Certification Program within 1 year on employment.

Qualifications

EDUCATION


High School diploma required. Associate degree with a concentration in language, communication or an allied medical field preferred.


EXPERIENCE


Minimum of one year of medical interpreting required. Experience in a healthcare/hospital setting preferred. Experience in handling a variety of customers at all socio-economic levels. Ability to enter and retrieve data from EMR systems, i.e. Epic, Meditech


LICENSURE


YNHH Interpreter Certification Program required within 1 year of employmentNational Certification of Medical Interpreters required within 18 months of employment. National certification required for Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Russian, Arabic, Vietnamese and Korean. Not required for other languages


SPECIAL SKILLS


Must be fluent in a foreign language and English both verbal and written. Proven ability to work as a part of a team and to work with limited supervision. Completes the accurate entry of data in both Epic and the Language Services System. Basic knowledge of medical vocabulary in at least two languages.


PHYSICAL DEMAND


Hearing sufficient to understand and interface effectively between two or more parties in a medical interview who speak different spoken languages. Sitting 10-20% of the day, Standing or ambulating 80% of the day, Able to move quickly through a large, multi-floored complex with many buildings Visual acuity sufficient to read printed matter. May require travel to different YNHH facilities to include satellite offices.
