What is a visual display designer?

Visual Display Designers are creative professionals who design and arrange visual presentations in retail stores, showrooms, exhibitions, and other spaces to attract and engage customers. They use a combination of color, lighting, props, and layout techniques to showcase products and communicate brand messages effectively. Their work helps create appealing environments that enhance shopping experiences and drive sales. Visual Display Designers often collaborate with marketing teams and store managers to ensure displays align with promotional strategies and brand identity.

How does a visual display designer typically collaborate with marketing and merchandising teams?

Visual Display Designers work closely with marketing and merchandising teams to ensure that in-store displays and window setups align with current campaigns, brand messaging, and product launches. Regular collaboration involves brainstorming sessions, reviewing promotional calendars, and adapting visual concepts based on feedback. This teamwork ensures that displays not only attract customers but also support sales objectives and highlight key products. Clear communication and adaptability are essential, as priorities can shift quickly in response to sales data or marketing strategies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a visual display designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Visual Display Designer, you need a strong background in design principles, spatial awareness, and often a degree in visual merchandising, design, or a related field. Familiarity with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite and 3D modeling tools, as well as hands-on experience with materials and fabrication techniques, is essential. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication are critical soft skills for developing compelling displays and collaborating with marketing teams. These skills ensure that displays attract customers, enhance brand image, and ultimately drive sales in competitive retail environments.

Job description

Imagination New York is growing our creative team and looking for a talented Senior Visual Designer to help shape visual identities for both established and challenger brands. You'll design across formats - from large-scale environments to digital platforms - crafting content and experiences that push brands forward. If you love solving creative problems as much as making beautiful work, we want to hear from you.
As our Senior Visual Designer, you'll collaborate with talented creatives, strategists, producers and designers who believe curiosity, collaboration and bold thinking lead to the best work.
While we aim to support a healthy work-life balance, there will occasionally be times during live events and production where flexibility outside standard working hours is needed.
Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States to be considered for this role.
Concept & Ideation:
  • Display a cohesive understanding of design principles that make innovative and effective brand communications, large-scale graphics, and digital design.
  • Work with Creative Strategists, Designers and Copywriters to shape multi-channel creative ideas.
  • Develop and present concept/design treatments, mood boards, and storyboards for projects.
  • Help drive creative innovation within the team, sharing your unique perspective and expertise in animation and motion design.
Design & Execution:
  • Design for multiple formats including print, digital, experiential, and motion.
  • Ensure that all work aligns with client brand guidelines while pushing creativity within those constraints.
  • Develop spatial graphics for live experiences (installations, exhibitions and brand activations).
  • Design UI/UX elements for interactive touchpoints
  • Support internal and external presentations, ensuring they are visually compelling and well-structured.
  • Liaise with the production team to ensure the best creative solutions are realized and executed flawlessly.
  • Present ideas to internal teams and clients, articulating design rationale and receiving feedback constructively.
Innovation & Learning:
  • Maintain an inquisitive and passionate interest in experiential design, content and brand storytelling.
  • Contribute to a culture of experimentation and creative exploration within the team.
  • 5-6 years of agency experience in graphic, digital, or brand design (agency experience is essential).
  • A degree or equivalent qualification in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, or a related field - or comparable experience.
  • Enthusiastic and open-minded creative thinker, passionate about pushing design boundaries.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign)  and Figma.
  • An interest in motion graphics and animation-any prior experience with After Effects is a bonus.
  • Experience in storyboarding and proof-of-concept development for both static and motion design.
  • Strong ability to articulate and translate designs to artworks, working closely with designers, producers, and client services.
  • Knowledge of digital technologies, platforms, and multi-channel design applications.
  • Experience working to tight deadlines, with excellent time management skills.
  • Strong presentation and client liaison skills, with the ability to articulate design decisions clearly.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and take ownership of projects.
  • A team player, eager to learn and contribute across different types of design projects.
What we can offer you:
  • Work with a state-of-the-art product and deliver it to exciting and innovative brands.
  • Learning and development opportunities that contribute to professional growth.
  • A fun, engaging work culture
  • Be part of a mission-driven team that values agility, integrity, and excellence.
  • Opportunity to contribute to large-scale, high-impact projects from day one.
  • Dedicated personal growth & development through our GrowForward programme.
Benefits and perks offered:
  • Comprehensive paid time off benefits
  • Hybrid work model, where our team comes into the office a minimum of 3 days per week
  • Generous parental leave
  • Up to 4% safe harbor company 401k match
  • Comprehensive, low-cost health benefits
