What are visual development internships?

Visual Development Internships are temporary positions offered by animation studios, game companies, or film production houses for students or recent graduates interested in the visual development field. Interns in these roles assist professional artists in creating the look and feel of animated films, TV shows, or games by contributing to concept art, environment design, color scripts, and character design. These internships provide hands-on experience, mentorship, and exposure to the production pipeline, helping interns build their portfolios and develop industry-relevant skills. Completing a visual development internship can be a valuable step toward a career as a visual development artist.

What do visual development interns do?

As a Visual Development Intern, you will typically work on creating concept art, mood boards, and visual assets that help shape the look and feel of animation or game projects. Your daily tasks may include collaborating with art directors, character designers, and other artists to develop environments, props, and color scripts. Interns often attend team meetings, receive feedback on their work, and may have opportunities to present their ideas. This role offers valuable exposure to the full production pipeline and helps build a strong foundation for a future career in visual development.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a visual development intern?

To thrive as a Visual Development Intern, you need a solid foundation in drawing, color theory, composition, and digital painting, typically demonstrated through a strong portfolio and relevant art or design coursework. Familiarity with industry-standard tools like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and possibly 3D software such as Blender or Maya is often expected. Creativity, adaptability, and strong collaboration skills help you contribute effectively to team-based projects and respond to feedback. These skills ensure you can create compelling visuals that align with project goals and adapt to the fast-paced, iterative environment of animation or game studios.

Job description

As a family-run, high-tech company with nearly 19,000 employees at 71 locations worldwide, we are looking for forward thinkers with unconventional ideas and drive to join our team. Our company culture, which values collaboration and mutual trust, creates the ideal framework for boldly trying new things and questioning the status quo. Our technologies inspire people to develop and produce things that are currently unimaginable. Whether lasers, machine tools, EUV or electronics - TRUMPF is building technological worlds for future generations. Are you ready for new challenges?

This position will work across multiple Fulfillment functions, including Project Management, Installation Coordination, System Support Engineering, Field Service, and other internal stakeholders. The intern will support projects intended to improve how customers move from order entry through installation, acceptance, training, and ongoing support.

The role is intended for an individual interested in operations, project management, customer experience, process improvement, manufacturing technology, and data analytics. The intern will be expected to work independently on defined projects while collaborating with subject matter experts throughout the organization.

Internship Duration: Onsite Farmington, CT from January 2027 - August 2027 working at least 24+ hours a week

Key Responsibilities and Projects

Customer Fulfillment Road Map Development

  • Develop a customer-facing road map that clearly communicates the complete TRUMPF fulfillment and installation experience from order through successful production.
  • The road map should align customer expectations with TRUMPF's internal project gates and responsibilities while incorporating the operating model currently used for Smart Factory projects.

Technology-Specific Preinstallation Toolkit

  • Develop standardized preinstallation reference tools for Installation Coordinators supporting specific TRUMPF technologies.
  • The objective is to provide Installation Coordinators with a practical working tool rather than requiring information to be gathered repeatedly from multiple systems and documents.

System Support Performance Metrics and Data Development

  • Support the System Support Engineering team in developing performance measurements for the newly established phone-support model.
  • The project should identify metrics that measure whether System Support is actually solving problems, creating value for customers, and reducing downstream Service demand.
  • Assist in defining the metrics, identifying available data sources, developing initial reporting structures, and establishing a baseline for future measurement.

Installation Readiness and Internal Handoff Analysis

  • Evaluate how information moves between Sales, Order Processing, Project Management, Installation Coordination, System Support, and Field Service prior to installation.
  • Identify where information is lost, duplicated, delayed, or dependent on individual knowledge.
  • Reduce avoidable installation delays and create clearer ownership throughout the fulfillment process.

Fulfillment Lessons Learned and Continuous Improvement System

  • Assist in developing a structured process for capturing and using lessons learned from installations and customer projects.
  • Important knowledge may remain with individual Project Managers, Installation Coordinators, System Support Engineers, or technicians. This project will explore how that knowledge can be converted into reusable organizational standards.

Desired Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Business, Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Operations Management, Project Management, Data Analytics, Manufacturing, or a related field.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Interest in manufacturing technology and operational processes.
  • Ability to work with multiple stakeholders and gather information from subject matter experts.
  • Strong Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel skills.
  • Ability to organize complex technical information into clear and usable visual formats.
  • Comfortable working independently on project-based assignments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Curiosity and willingness to challenge existing processes and measurements.

Internship Outcomes

At the conclusion of the internship, the successful candidate should have contributed tangible tools and operating structures that can continue to be used by the Fulfillment organization.

Expected deliverables may include a customer Fulfillment road map, technology-specific Installation Coordinator toolkits, improved customer-readiness documentation, System Support performance dashboards and KPI definitions, standardized internal handoff requirements, and a repeatable lessons-learned process.

The overall objective of the internship is not simply to document existing processes, but to help build scalable Fulfillment structures that improve customer experience, installation readiness, internal alignment, and operational performance.
