What is a Visual Design Internship?

A Visual Design Internship is a temporary position, often for students or recent graduates, that provides hands-on experience in creating visual concepts for digital or print media. Interns typically assist with designing graphics, layouts, branding materials, and user interfaces under the guidance of senior designers. The role offers opportunities to build a professional portfolio, learn industry-standard tools, and understand real-world design workflows. It’s a valuable stepping stone for those pursuing a career in graphic or visual design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Visual Design Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Visual Design Intern, you need a solid understanding of design principles, color theory, and typography, often demonstrated through a portfolio and coursework in graphic or visual design. Proficiency with industry-standard tools like Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and familiarity with prototyping tools such as Figma or Sketch are typically expected. Strong attention to detail, creativity, openness to feedback, and effective communication make a candidate stand out. These skills ensure you can create visually compelling work that aligns with brand goals and collaborate effectively within design teams.

Job description

Position Title: Intern

Location: Remote (U.S. only). Applicants must be current college students or recent graduates residing in the United States.

About the Active Minds Internship Program

Active Minds is the nation’s leading nonprofit organization changing the culture around mental health. Through our presence at more than 800 high school and college campuses, in corporate settings, and with a wide-reaching public audience, Active Minds is creating communities of support and saving lives. Founded in 2003 by Alison Malmon after the tragic suicide of her brother Brian, Active Minds is dedicated to supporting a new generation in ending the silence, helping to make mental health as highly valued as physical health. Through our many programs – including the emotionally gripping Send Silence Packing® traveling exhibit and our compelling Active Minds Speakers – we are changing culture and behaviors related to mental health across the country.

Our internships are geared towards current college students and recent college graduates. As a small nonprofit, Active Minds relies on the help of our interns tremendously. They work directly on important initiatives and projects and assist staff on a variety of administrative tasks. Interns have the opportunity to do substantive work, gain experience in the nonprofit sector, and help change the culture around mental health.
All Fall 2026 internships will be remote, with an anticipated start date of September 14th, 2026  and an anticipated end date of December 4th, 2026. We expect interns to work a minimum of 20 hours a week, set a consistent work schedule between 9:00am and 5:00pm EST Monday through Friday, and commit to staying on board for the entire semester.
Active Minds pays interns $18 per hour

Visual Design Internship
As part of the Marketing and Communications team, interns will learn how the visual brand and design can support a nonprofit’s mission and can have a big impact. Because our mission is to empower young people to change the conversation about mental health, we deeply value our interns’ unique experiences, perspectives, creative ideas, and skills.

Visual Design interns are passionate about visual design and eager about working in a collaborative, meaningful, and creative environment. We’ll work with you to create a semester that gives you experience and helps you understand your career goals better. You’ll expand your portfolio and gain industry exposure while also helping us to tackle all kinds of needs, both big and small, from opportunities like digital graphics to print collateral to video editing and more.

The Visual Design intern will be supervised by a member of Active Minds’ Visual Brand team and work on a wide array of projects, including: developing Active Minds visual design templates, development of new store products, graphics support for the blog and website, design projects for Programs and Development teams, support ongoing visual brand audit and video support (depending on interest and experience).

Visual Design interns are valued members of the team who support the mission and vision of our work through a variety of projects in ways both big and small.

IMPORTANT NOTE: We will not be considering any applications that do not include a portfolio/work samples.
