What is a visual design internship?

A Visual Design Internship is a temporary position, often for students or recent graduates, that provides hands-on experience in creating visual concepts for digital or print media. Interns typically assist with designing graphics, layouts, branding materials, and user interfaces under the guidance of senior designers. The role offers opportunities to build a professional portfolio, learn industry-standard tools, and understand real-world design workflows. It’s a valuable stepping stone for those pursuing a career in graphic or visual design.

What types of projects can I expect to work on during a visual design internship, and how much creative input will I have?

As a Visual Design Intern, you'll typically assist with a variety of projects such as creating digital assets for social media, designing layouts for web pages, contributing to branding materials, and supporting the development of marketing collateral. Interns are often encouraged to share their ideas and may be given creative ownership over smaller projects or aspects of larger campaigns. While you'll collaborate closely with senior designers and marketing teams, you'll also have opportunities to present your concepts and receive constructive feedback, which helps hone your skills and build a strong portfolio.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a visual design intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Visual Design Intern, you need a solid understanding of design principles, color theory, and typography, often demonstrated through a portfolio and coursework in graphic or visual design. Proficiency with industry-standard tools like Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and familiarity with prototyping tools such as Figma or Sketch are typically expected. Strong attention to detail, creativity, openness to feedback, and effective communication make a candidate stand out. These skills ensure you can create visually compelling work that aligns with brand goals and collaborate effectively within design teams.

Job description

Visual Design Intern
Claim Health • New York, NY (In-Person) • Internship
10-12 weeks • Competitive stipend • YC-backed, early-stage
About Claim Health
Claim Health is the AI Revenue Platform for Post-Acute Care.
With the US population aging and preference for care moving to the home, post-acute care (home health, skilled nursing, home care, hospice) is one of the fastest growing verticals within healthcare. Post-acute providers operate across fragmented systems, manual workflows, and reactive processes that create operational drag and financial uncertainty. Claim Health replaces this fragmentation with an intelligent, software-driven platform that unifies data, automates execution, and enables real-time decision-making across revenue-critical operations.
The Role
You'll work directly with the founding team to extend Claim Health's brand across everything we put in front of customers, partners, and the world - shipping work that actually goes live.
You can expect to:
  • Own visual design across marketing assets - social content, decks, one-pagers, and campaign materials
  • Apply and extend Claim Health's existing brand identity consistently across every surface
  • Create graphics and visual content that makes people stop scrolling
  • Support sales and growth with polished collateral that reflects where we're headed as a company
  • Collaborate directly with the founding team to bring creative concepts to life fast
What We're Looking For
  • A strong portfolio - we want to see brand application, marketing design, and social content. Show us work you're proud of.
  • Sharp eye for typography, layout, and visual hierarchy
  • Proficiency in Figma and the Adobe Creative Suite
  • Ability to move fast and ship - this is a startup, not an agency
  • On-site in NYC full-time for the duration of the internship

Strong plus
  • Motion graphics experience - After Effects or similar
  • 3D design experience - Cinema 4D or similar
  • Interest in healthcare or enterprise software
Compensation
Competitive stipend • Direct collaboration with the founding team • Real work that ships
Claim Health is an equal opportunity employer.
