What do vision therapists do?

Vision therapists evaluate and treat visual processing and eye coordination issues through individualized exercises and activities. They work with patients, often children, to improve visual skills such as focusing, tracking, and binocular vision, using tools like prisms and computer-based programs. Certification and knowledge of visual development are important for this role.

How long does it take to be a vision therapist?

Becoming a vision therapist typically requires completing a specialized training program or certification, which can take several months to a year depending on the program and prior qualifications. Many vision therapists also need to have a background in healthcare or related fields and may pursue additional certifications to enhance their skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in vision therapy, and why are they important?

To thrive in Vision Therapy, you need a strong understanding of visual system function, diagnostic testing, and individualized therapy techniques, often supported by a background in optometry, orthoptics, or a related healthcare field. Familiarity with instruments like visual field analyzers, computerized vision therapy software, and charting systems is typically required, and certification as a vision therapist (e.g., COVT) is highly valued. Excellent interpersonal communication, patience, and motivational skills help you engage effectively with patients of all ages and foster their progress. These competencies are crucial for tailoring therapy plans, supporting patient compliance, and achieving successful rehabilitation outcomes.

What is vision therapy?

A Vision Therapy job involves working with patients, often under the supervision of an optometrist, to help improve visual skills and processing through guided exercises and activities. Vision therapists assist individuals with conditions such as amblyopia, strabismus, and visual processing disorders. They conduct vision training sessions, track patient progress, and provide support to ensure successful treatment outcomes. This role requires strong communication skills, patience, and knowledge of vision therapy techniques.

What does a typical day look like for someone working in vision therapy?

A typical day in Vision Therapy often includes conducting vision assessments, developing and guiding patients through individualized therapy exercises, and tracking progress in medical records. You may work one-on-one with patients ranging from children with learning-related visual issues to adults recovering from brain injuries. Collaboration with optometrists, ophthalmologists, and sometimes educators or occupational therapists is common, ensuring a holistic approach to patient care. The setting is usually a clinic or specialized vision therapy practice, and the role is highly hands-on and patient-oriented, with varied tasks to keep each day engaging.

How do I become a vision therapist?

To become a vision therapist, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, followed by completing specialized training or certification in vision therapy. Many employers prefer candidates with a background in healthcare, such as optometry or related fields, and certification from organizations like the College of Optometrists in Vision Development (COVD) or the American Board of Certification in Vision Development (ABCVD). Continuing education and hands-on experience are also important for career advancement in this field.
