Job description

SWJ Technologie specializes in providing engineering, planning, and project management services across various industries. We are currently seeking a Vision System Engineer for an assigned project with a client in the automotive industry. The position is based in Novi, MI, or Charlotte, NC, and follows a hybrid work model requiring in-office presence at least three days per week, as well as international and domestic travel of up to approximately 20%.If you are eager to grow your career and make a meaningful impact on exciting projects, we look forward to your application.
PURPOSE:ย 
The role focuses on the future product development of body exterior systems for next-generation electric vehicles, including pick-up trucks and rugged SUVs. The position is responsible for driving the design, development, validation, and launch of exterior components and accessories, ensuring high standards of quality, performance, and innovation while collaborating cross-functionally and with suppliers.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead and/or participate in the development of RFQ packages, technical reviews, and supplier selection processes.
  • Drive the development of Class A exterior components and trim mechanical systems across all product development phases (Design, Test, and Launch).
  • Lead cross-functional Product Development Teams and collaborate with internal stakeholders and suppliers to define design direction and execute innovative exterior systems and accessories.
  • Develop and maintain product documentation including specifications, DVP&R, DFMEA, control plans, and quality requirements.
  • Direct design and analysis teams in creating CAD models, performing packaging studies, and validating designs using CAE tools (FEA, CFD, crash analysis).
  • Ensure compliance with design rules, regulatory requirements, and performance attributes such as NVH, water management, and craftsmanship.
  • Act as a key technical decision-maker and liaison across functional teams.
  • Define and manage component and subsystem requirements, including interface control documents (ICDs).
  • Ensure achievement of program targets including cost, budget, timing, weight, and quality.
  • Track and resolve open issues in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
  • Oversee validation activities and ensure complete testing coverage and traceability.
  • Conduct design reviews and product evaluations during prototype and pre-production phases.
  • Support prototype development, virtual and physical validation, and field testing.
  • Stay updated on market trends, technological advancements, and customer expectations to drive continuous improvement.
  • Apply automotive best practices such as Robust Engineering, Design for Manufacturability (DFM), and Design for Serviceability (DFS).
  • Travel:
    • Occasional domestic and international travel required.
    • Travel may include visits to assembly plants, suppliers, tool shops, and participation in vehicle builds and launch events.
    • Valid passport required for international travel.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field.
  • Proven experience in automotive product design and development.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical challenges.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in the field of expertise

REQUIRED SKILLS:
  • Expertise in exterior systems with specialization in one or more of the following:
    • Glazing
    • Wipers
    • Wash Systems
    • Mirrors
  • Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, including GD&T, material selection, and DFM.
  • Proficiency in CAD tools (preferably CATIA V5/V6).
  • Experience with PLM systems (preferably Teamcenter).
  • Knowledge or hands-on experience with CAE tools and methods.
  • Experience in automotive product launch, including prototype builds and production ramp-up.
  • Familiarity with high-volume automotive production processes.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a first-principles approach.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to build strong relationships and collaborate effectively across all organizational levels.
  • Adaptability, resourcefulness, and a growth mindset in a fast-paced environment.

  • Willingness to travel
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Work is normally performed in an office, laboratory, manufacturing floor, or machine shop setting where physical work includes, but is not limited to sitting, standing, reaching, kneeling, bending, and lifting up to 25 lbs.
