How much do virtualization jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 18, 2026, the average hourly pay for virtualization in Tennessee is $54.06, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $44.71 and $61.73 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is virtualization and how is it used in IT environments?

Virtualization is the technology that allows you to create multiple simulated environments or dedicated resources from a single, physical hardware system. In IT, it's commonly used to run multiple operating systems on one server, improve resource utilization, and streamline management. Virtualization enhances flexibility, scalability, and can reduce costs by consolidating workloads onto fewer physical machines. It's widely implemented in data centers for server, storage, and network virtualization, supporting cloud computing and disaster recovery solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Virtualization Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtualization Engineer, you need a strong understanding of server infrastructure, networking, and operating systems, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Proficiency with virtualization platforms like VMware, Hyper-V, or Citrix, as well as certifications such as VMware Certified Professional (VCP), is highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure systems are efficiently virtualized, secure, and scalable to meet organizational IT needs.

What is the difference between Virtualization vs System Administrator?

AspectVirtualizationSystem Administrator
Primary RoleCreating and managing virtual environments and resourcesManaging and maintaining IT infrastructure and networks
CertificationsVMware, Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator, CompTIA Server+CompTIA Server+, Cisco CCNA, Microsoft Certified: Windows Server
Work EnvironmentData centers, cloud platforms, virtual labsOffice, data centers, remote support
Industry UsageCloud providers, data centers, enterprise ITAll industries with IT infrastructure needs

While virtualization specialists focus on creating virtual environments to optimize hardware resources, system administrators oversee overall IT infrastructure, including hardware, networks, and software. Both roles require technical certifications and often work together to ensure efficient IT operations.

What jobs make 10,000 a month without a degree?

In virtualization-related roles, high-paying jobs such as senior systems engineers, cloud architects, or virtualization consultants can earn $10,000 or more monthly, especially with extensive experience and certifications like VMware or Cisco. These positions often require strong technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and knowledge of virtualization platforms, but may not require a traditional degree if demonstrated expertise is proven through certifications and work history.

What jobs pay $500,000 a year in the US?

In the field of virtualization, senior roles such as virtualization architects, senior cloud engineers, or IT directors with extensive experience and specialized skills can reach or exceed $500,000 annually, especially in large organizations or consulting firms. These positions often require advanced certifications, deep expertise in cloud platforms, and leadership responsibilities. Compensation at this level typically includes base salary, bonuses, and stock options.

What jobs make 5000 a week without a degree?

In virtualization-related roles, high-paying positions such as senior systems engineers or virtualization architects can earn around $5,000 weekly, especially with extensive experience and certifications like VMware or Cisco. These jobs typically require strong technical skills, knowledge of virtualization platforms, and often involve managing complex IT environments, but they do not always require a formal degree.

What does a virtualization engineer do?

A virtualization engineer designs, implements, and manages virtualized computing environments using technologies like VMware, Hyper-V, or KVM. They optimize server resources, ensure system security, and troubleshoot virtualization issues, often working with cloud platforms and requiring knowledge of networking and scripting. Certifications such as VMware Certified Professional (VCP) can enhance job prospects.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in virtualization roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in virtualization often encounter challenges such as managing resource allocation, ensuring security across virtual environments, and maintaining optimal system performance. Addressing these challenges involves staying updated on the latest virtualization tools, regularly monitoring system metrics, and implementing strong access controls. Collaboration with network, storage, and cybersecurity teams is also essential to ensure seamless integration and quick resolution of any issues. Proactive learning and hands-on experience with different hypervisors and management platforms can help professionals stay ahead in this dynamic field.

Using a combination of shared and private/dedicated platforms, LightEdge has been successful in offering businesses alternatives that streamline operations, improve reliability and reduce costs.
If you are passionate about creating real solutions that help businesses with cutting-edge technology, want to be challenged to think out of the box and be in a position where you can impact change on a daily basis, then LightEdge can offer you a dynamic corporate environment built on teamwork and personal responsibility.

Lightedge is seeking a Virtualization Engineer II to support the administration, operational support, and lifecycle management of VMware-based cloud infrastructure platforms with a strong focus on VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF). This role will support ongoing VCF initiatives and operational growth as Lightedge continues expanding VCF-based service offerings throughout 2026 and beyond.

The ideal candidate will possess solid experience with VMware virtualization technologies and demonstrate foundational knowledge of VMware Cloud Foundation concepts, including vSphere, vSAN, NSX, and SDDC lifecycle operations. This role will work closely with senior engineering staff, implementation teams, vendors, and customers to support operational excellence across enterprise virtualization environments.

This position is well-suited for engineers looking to further develop expertise within modern software-defined data center (SDDC) and VCF environments while operating in a 24x7x365 enterprise managed services environment.

Responsibilities:
  • Support operational management and lifecycle administration of VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) environments within existing production infrastructure.
  • Assist with installation, configuration, and validation of vSphere, vSAN, NSX-T, and associated virtualization infrastructure components.
  • Participate in infrastructure upgrades, patching, and lifecycle management activities using SDDC Manager and related VMware tooling.
  • Collaborate with implementation and engineering teams during onboarding, expansion, and transition activities for VCF-based environments.
  • Troubleshoot virtualization, compute, storage, and networking issues within production environments.
  • Collaborate with cloud, networking, security, and storage teams to support integrated infrastructure delivery.
  • Participate in incident response, escalation support, and root cause analysis efforts.
  • Participate in scheduled customer-facing technical calls, troubleshooting sessions, maintenance activities, and escalation discussions as required.
  • Collaborate with customers, vendors, and internal technical teams during operational support activities and infrastructure issue resolution.
  • Coordinate with hardware, software, and support vendors by opening and managing support cases and facilitating troubleshooting efforts through resolution.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, operational procedures, and runbooks.
  • Participate in a shared 24x7x365 on-call rotation with other virtualization engineers. Current rotation scheduling is approximately one week of primary on-call coverage every six weeks, subject to team size and operational needs.
  • Support scheduled after-hours maintenance activities and infrastructure upgrades as required.
  • Contribute to process improvement and operational standardization initiatives.
  • Maintain awareness of evolving VMware and VCF platform capabilities and best practices.
  • Ability to support secure, compliance-driven enterprise environments.
Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of enterprise virtualization or infrastructure engineering experience.
