Virtual Teaching information
What is virtual teaching?
What are some common challenges virtual teachers face when engaging students online, and how can these be addressed?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual teacher, and why are they important?
What is the difference between Virtual Teaching vs Virtual Tutoring?
| Aspect | Virtual Teaching | Virtual Tutoring |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Typically requires a teaching certification or degree in education | Often requires subject-specific knowledge; certifications vary |
| Work Environment | Usually in a formal classroom setting, often with multiple students | One-on-one or small group sessions, more personalized |
| Employer & Industry | Schools, educational platforms, universities | Private tutors, online tutoring platforms, freelance |
Virtual Teaching involves delivering lessons to multiple students in a structured environment, often requiring formal teaching credentials. Virtual Tutoring focuses on personalized instruction for individuals or small groups, with less formal certification requirements. Both roles utilize online platforms but differ mainly in scope, credentials, and setting.

Job description
We're building a roster of experienced educators we trust with Nashville families, and we want to know what you teach best.
Every educator in the Thrive network has a specialty. Maybe you're exceptional at early literacy and know how to help a struggling reader finally crack the code. Maybe your strength is middle school math, high school chemistry, executive functioning, ACT prep, or working with students who have ADHD or learning differences. We're not looking for generalists who will take any student who comes along. We want to understand where your experience is deepest so we can match you with students who genuinely need what you do well.
Thrive also isn't built around a one-size-fits-all curriculum or prescribed scope and sequence. We trust experienced teachers to determine what an individual student needs, select the right resources, and build thoughtful instruction around that student. You'll have meaningful autonomy and room for creativity, along with the professional responsibility that comes with it: strong lesson planning, sound instructional decisions, attention to progress data, and clear communication with parents.
When you accept a student, you're committing to a consistent weekly schedule for the school year. These are relationships designed to develop over time, giving you the opportunity to know a student well, adjust your teaching as they grow, and see the impact of your work.
What You'll Do- Provide recurring 1:1 instruction within your area of teaching expertise
- Assess where each student is academically and identify the skills, gaps, or priorities that should drive instruction
- Develop purposeful lesson plans based on the individual student rather than following a predetermined Thrive curriculum
- Select, adapt, and create high-quality instructional resources that fit the student's goals, learning profile, schoolwork, and interests
- Use student work, assessment results, school feedback, and other evidence of learning to make data-informed instructional decisions
- Track progress over time and adjust your approach, pacing, materials, or goals when the evidence tells you something isn't working
- Communicate consistently and professionally with parents, providing clear updates on progress, challenges, priorities, and recommendations
- Coordinate with the Thrive team when a student's needs shift or when additional expertise or support may be appropriate
- Maintain the consistent weekly schedule you committed to for the school year
- You have a clear teaching specialty. You know the subjects, grade levels, student profiles, or learning needs where your experience is strongest, and you can articulate what makes you particularly effective there.
- You know how to plan instruction. You can move from "Here's where this student is" to a thoughtful plan for what comes next, rather than relying on worksheets, homework help, or a prepackaged program to determine the session.
- You're a data-informed decision maker. You pay attention to student work and progress, notice patterns, and use that information to decide when to reteach, change strategies, increase challenge, or shift priorities.
- You value autonomy and use it well. You enjoy having the freedom to choose resources and shape instruction, and you bring the preparation, creativity, organization, and professional judgment necessary to make that freedom productive.
- You communicate exceptionally well with parents. You're polished, proactive, and clear. Families understand what you're working on, how their child is progressing, and what you recommend without having to chase you for information.
- You value consistency. You understand that trust and progress are built over time, and you're prepared to show up for the same student, at the same time, week after week throughout the school year.
- You carry yourself professionally. You are dependable, prepared, responsive, and comfortable representing Thrive in a private-family setting where discretion and good judgment matter.
Requirements
Must-Haves- Bachelor's degree
- 2+ years of teaching or direct instructional experience
- Demonstrated expertise in a specific subject, grade range, intervention, or learning need
- Strong instructional skills, including individualized lesson planning, resource selection, and using student progress to guide instruction
- Excellent parent communication and a polished, professional presence
- Ability to maintain a consistent weekly schedule and commit to each accepted student for the full school year
- Reliable transportation for in-person placements or a professional virtual teaching setup
- Ability to pass a background check and provide professional references
- Professionalism and discretion when working with private families
- Active teaching license or educator certification
- Specialized certification or training in your area of expertise
- Graduate degree or advanced coursework in education, your subject area, or a related specialty
- Experience providing individualized instruction and working directly with families
Benefits
Logistics & Compensation- Location: Nashville and surrounding communities, including Brentwood, Franklin, Green Hills, East Nashville, Mt. Juliet, and Hendersonville
- Schedule: You tell us when you're consistently available, and we match you with families within those windows. Weekday afternoons and early evenings are in highest demand, with some morning and weekend opportunities.
- Commitment: A consistent weekly day and time, with a school-year commitment to each student you accept. We believe meaningful progress comes from relationships and routines that have time to develop.
- Typical Load: Most educators work with one or two students at a time, with the option to take on additional matches based on your availability.
- Sessions: Typically 60-90 minutes, recurring weekly with the same student
- Compensation: $45-$90 per hour, based on education, experience, and area of specialization. Paid weekly.
- Position Type: Part-time, ongoing
- No Platform Fees: No bidding on students, competing on rate, or giving up a percentage of your pay. Thrive sets compensation and handles billing directly.
You bring the teaching expertise. We create the conditions for you to use it well.
- Thoughtful matching: We match you based on your specialty, experience, location, availability, and the needs of the individual student.
- Real instructional autonomy: Thrive does not prescribe a one-size-fits-all curriculum or scope and sequence. You have the freedom to select resources, design instruction, and make decisions based on the student in front of you.
- Long-term student relationships: Our goal is consistent, school-year partnerships that give you time to build trust, understand your student, and see meaningful progress.
- Less administrative friction: Thrive handles family intake, billing, and placement logistics so you can spend your energy planning and teaching.
- A professional educator network: You become part of a community that values strong teaching, good judgment, communication, and individualized learning.
- Opportunities to grow with Thrive: Educators in our network receive priority consideration for Private Teacher Placement opportunities, including full-time private educator roles.
We're intentional about who joins the Thrive network. Families trust us to introduce educators with real teaching experience, a clear area of expertise, strong communication, and the consistency to become a meaningful part of a student's school year. We review applications year-round and reach out when a family's needs align with your strengths, availability, and location.
About ThriveThrive Education Partners connects exceptional educators with families seeking highly personalized education.
We believe students do their best learning when instruction is built around who they are, what they need, and how they learn. Our role is to bring the right educator and family together, then support that relationship so teachers have the freedom to teach thoughtfully and students have the consistency they need to grow.
Thrive Education Partners is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and make hiring decisions based on experience, skills, and business needs, without regard to any status protected by applicable law.
