Job description

Be a learning ally and help an adult in your community! Riverside County Library System (RCLS) - Literacy Services provides free one-on-one tutoring year-round to adults virtually and in-person at an RCLS library branch to assist them in achieving their literacy goals in English reading, writing, listening, speaking, and digital skills.

No teaching experience required! Training and continuous support are provided.

Responsibilities:

  • Meet with your assigned learner at the library, over Zoom, or in an approved off-site location at least once per week for a minimum of six months
  • Meet for approximately 1.5 hours per session
  • Prepare and implement tutoring sessions tailored to the individual literacy needs, goals, and interests of your learner
  • Submit monthly reports on tutoring time spent, goals worked on, challenges faced, and milestones achieved by the monthly deadline
  • Collaborate with RCLS literacy staff for updated goal evaluations of your learner, as requested
  • Notify RCLS literacy staff regarding learner needs, challenges, concerns, questions, or situations that could affect tutoring for either you or your learner
  • Attend monthly tutor support meetings, tutor development trainings, and a minimum of one event/activity per year to support the program
  • Share information with the assigned learner about library services, programs, and the use of resources, and encourage them to participate in literacy opportunities

Qualifications:

  • Age eighteen or older. A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Patient, flexible, dependable, caring, inclusive, and culturally sensitive attitude
  • Able to maintain a minimum six-month commitment to meeting with adult learners weekly
  • Comfortable using a computer, email, Microsoft Office, and Google Suite programs preferred
  • Experience using Zoom or working in a virtual setting is preferred

Time Commitment:

In-person interview, online Volunteer Orientation plus 6 hours of Volunteer Tutor Training, then ongoing session planning and weekly meetings with a learner for a minimum of six months. Find scheduled dates HERE.
