What is a virtual stylist?

A Virtual Stylist is a fashion professional who provides styling advice and outfit recommendations to clients through online platforms, rather than in-person consultations. They use video calls, chat, or specialized apps to assess clients' needs, preferences, and wardrobe, and then suggest clothing and accessories that suit their style and body type. Virtual Stylists often work with individuals looking for a wardrobe refresh, special event styling, or ongoing fashion guidance. Their services can include personalized shopping suggestions, style boards, and direct links to purchase recommended items.

What does a virtual stylist do?

A virtual stylist works from home to assist others one on one with styling. You talk with clients via text and video conferences to learn about their personality, style, and fashion needs. You must be a little tech savvy and have a good background in fashion. Finding what your client likes is more important than what you want, but you provide guidance on popular trends. You also offer personal shopping for customers including clothing, shoes, and accessories. You provide input on new and current pieces, make quick decisions, and provide styling recommendations for everyday wardrobes and special events. It is essential that a virtual stylist knows how to interact and communicate effectively with clients. You might work with someone for one session, or build a long-term relationship.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual stylist?

To thrive as a Virtual Stylist, you need a solid understanding of fashion trends, color theory, and body types, often supported by a background in fashion or retail. Familiarity with virtual styling platforms, e-commerce systems, and digital communication tools is essential. Strong interpersonal skills, creativity, and the ability to listen deeply to client needs set standout stylists apart. These skills ensure clients receive personalized, practical style advice and an engaging, seamless online experience.

How do virtual stylists typically collaborate with clients and other team members?

Virtual Stylists often work closely with clients through video consultations, online chat, or curated digital lookbooks to understand their preferences, body types, and style goals. They also collaborate with merchandising teams to stay updated on inventory and trends, and may coordinate with photographers or social media teams for content creation. Clear communication and strong interpersonal skills are key, as stylists must balance client needs with brand guidelines. This collaborative approach ensures clients receive tailored fashion advice and enhances overall customer satisfaction.

What is the difference between Virtual Stylist vs Personal Shopper?

AspectVirtual StylistPersonal Shopper

Employer & IndustryFashion brands, styling services, e-commerceRetail stores, department stores, online retail

While both Virtual Stylists and Personal Shoppers assist clients with fashion needs, Virtual Stylists focus on providing styling advice and wardrobe consultations remotely, whereas Personal Shoppers primarily help clients select and purchase clothing either in-store or online. Both roles require fashion knowledge and excellent customer service skills, but their work environments and client interactions differ.

Job description

ANINE BING is looking for a Virtual Styling & Sales Lead to join our Ecommerce team based in Los Angeles.

This role is an opportunity to help shape the next chapter of ANINE BING. As a key contributor within our VIP Styling Studio team, the Virtual Styling & Sales Lead brings both strategic insight and hands-on execution to their work—supporting our global growth while staying grounded in the brand's DNA: refined, fast-moving, and always evolving.

We're looking for someone who thrives in a creative yet performance-driven environment. The ideal candidate combines a sharp eye for detail with a clear sense of the big picture. They're collaborative, resourceful, and energized by building something special—together.

This is a hybrid role based in Los Angeles, split between our HQ (2 days per week) and our retail stores (3 days per week). The role reports to the Head of Ecommerce.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Build and lead the ANINE BING VIP Styling Studio, partnering with E-Commerce, Retail, and Marketing to shape strategy and the day-to-day client experience
  • Develop the Studio's digital content, tools, and training library to build a scalable, consistent approach to clienteling across the brand
  • Grow and manage a personal portfolio of high-value clients through proactive outreach, styling appointments, and personalized product recommendations
  • Deliver against individual and Studio sales targets, with a focus on conversion, retention, and lifetime client value
  • Host virtual and in-person styling appointments, creating a seamless experience between online and in-store shopping
  • Identify and cultivate VIP clients across ANINE BING's digital and retail customer base, developing strategies to grow key client segments
  • Partner with Marketing and E-Commerce on clienteling moments, launches, events, and gifting initiatives that engage high-value customers
  • Establish reporting and KPIs for the Studio, using customer and sales insights to continuously evolve the program

Requirements:

  • Proven experience as a sales advisor or stylist, with a track record of building lasting client relationships through personalized recommendations
  • Experience in retail sales, clienteling, or personal styling, ideally within a VIP or high-touch customer environment
  • Familiarity with Shopify, Endear, or similar clienteling and CRM platforms preferred
  • Excellent written communication and customer service skills, with the ability to create compelling styling content
  • Comfortable working with sales data and KPIs to track performance and inform strategy
  • Flexible availability to support both in-office and in-store responsibilities each week

Benefits & Perks

  • Work/Life Balance: Enjoy flexible work schedules, generous paid time off, and additional summer days to recharge and reset.
  • In-Office Perks: Benefit from a hybrid work schedule and free daily in-office lunches designed to keep you energized, connected, and supported throughout your day.
  • We offer comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage—with ANINE BING covering a significant portion of the cost. Our benefits extend to your family and include a generous parental leave program.
  • Style Perks: Enjoy a generous employee discount and seasonal wardrobe allotments—so you can live the brand, not just represent it.

The target compensation for this role is between $60,000 - $75,000 annually, and includes eligibility for a generous commission structure.
