Planet Forward, a project of the George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs, teaches, celebrates, and rewards environmental storytelling by college students. Engaging a diverse audience from across the country, Planet Forward uses storytelling, media, and educational events to tell the stories of invention and innovation that can move the planet forward.
Position Specific Summary
The Planet Forward Environmental Media Lab is hiring a Research Assistant to support the production of a short environmental documentary covering sustainability issues in northern Alaska. The project will likely cover wildfire response & prevention, fire's impact on rural and Indigenous communities, ecological impacts of fire on permafrost, and related topics.
The Research Assistant will be responsible for:
  • Compiling data on wildfire's impact on environments and peoples in the arctic
  • Compiling background data on potential characters/subjects 
  • Assisting in writing interview questions and narrative outlines
  • Creating lists of potential distribution partners and festivals
  • Location permissions and other logistics related to preparation for production
Standard Position Description
The student will perform administrative and research tasks with some discretion under direction of faculty member or research coordinator. Tasks may include: assisting with experiments, coding, data entry, data cleaning, and data analysis, preparing research and drafts for articles, reports, and/or presentations. Students may also complete literature reviews, draft summaries, and create graphs and figures. Special projects or other duties may be assigned related to specific departmental/faculty needs.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience synthesizing and prioritizing research into memos
  • An interest in documentary film production and environmental topics such as wildfire
  • High attention to detail and organizational skills 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to make phone calls on the production's behalf
