Virtual Software Developer Apprenticeship information

What is a virtual software developer apprenticeship?

A Virtual Software Developer Apprenticeship is a structured training program that allows individuals to learn software development skills remotely while working for a company. Apprentices are mentored by experienced developers, participate in real projects, and gain hands-on experience using industry-standard tools and practices. The program typically combines online coursework with practical, on-the-job training, helping apprentices build a strong foundation in programming, problem-solving, and teamwork. Upon completion, apprentices are often well-prepared for entry-level software developer roles.

What can I expect from the mentorship and collaboration experience during a virtual software developer apprenticeship?

As a Virtual Software Developer Apprentice, you can expect to work closely with experienced developers and mentors through regular video calls, code reviews, and collaborative projects. Communication is typically structured via online platforms like Slack or Microsoft Teams, enabling real-time feedback and support. You’ll often participate in virtual stand-ups, pair programming sessions, and team meetings, which foster a sense of community despite the remote setup. This collaborative environment not only enhances your technical skills but also helps you build professional relationships and learn industry best practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual software developer apprentice, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Software Developer Apprentice, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals (such as Python, Java, or JavaScript), basic software development concepts, and usually a relevant educational background or coursework. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, cloud-based development environments, and collaboration platforms such as Slack or Jira is typically expected. Strong problem-solving skills, proactive communication, and a willingness to learn quickly help apprentices stand out in remote, team-based settings. These competencies are crucial for effectively contributing to projects, adapting to evolving technologies, and building a successful foundation for a software development career.

Meet HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding
With more than 25,000 employees – including third-, fourth- and even fifth-generation shipbuilders – HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division is the largest industrial employer in Virginia. We’re the sole designer, builder and refueler of U.S. Navy nuclear aircraft carriers and one of two providers of U.S. Navy nuclear submarines. Our diverse and innovative team of professionals ranges from skilled trades to project managers, engineers and software developers to solution architects, technical subject matter experts, and system users. We collaborate together at the forefront of technology, manufacturing, and integration of the most powerful and survivable naval ships in the world.

The Role

Design, develop, and test operating systems-level software, compilers, and network distribution software. Set operational specifications, and formulate and analyze software requirements. May design embedded systems software.

The Software Engineer 2 independently designs, develops, tests, and delivers features within a Scaled Agile (SAFe) team environment. This role focuses on building and integrating software components that support and extend Teamcenter and associated Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) capabilities. The engineer participates in code reviews, sprint ceremonies, and continuous improvement activities to ensure the delivery of maintainable, high quality solutions.
The engineer will contribute to applications and services that manage and process large-scale configuration management data used by Teamcenter and other internal systems. Work spans designing and implementing components that support data integrations, automation, workflows, and user facing capabilities across multiple technical domains without requiring deep specialization in any one area.
The Software Engineer 2 collaborates with developers, testers, product owners, system engineers, solution architects, and administrators to refine requirements, resolve issues, and improve overall system performance and reliability. This role applies solid programming skills to handle moderately complex tasks, supports architectural discussions, and helps improve development processes and team delivery practices.
This position offers the opportunity to grow technical expertise in PLM technologies—especially Teamcenter—while supporting mission critical systems that enable the construction of highly complex products in support of our nation’s defense.
