Position Summary

The Senior Network Engineer designs, implements, and manages Transcat's complex network infrastructure to ensure high availability, security, and optimal performance. This role acts as a technical leader within the IT Infrastructure department, responsible for strategic network planning, secure network design and architecture, solving complex problems, supervising implementations, and mentoring junior engineers.  This position requires the candidate to work onsite at our Rochester, NY facility for a minimum of three days per week, with the remaining days offering flexibility for remote work.

Responsibilities
  • Design and architect scalable, secure, and resilient network solutions aligned with business objectives.
  • Install, configure, and maintain advanced network hardware and software, including routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, virtual networking appliances/gateways and wireless access points.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex network issues involving routing, switching, security, and connectivity to minimize downtime.
  • Ensure the design, implementation, and maintenance of secure network architectures, including firewalls, VPNs, IDS/IPS, and zero trust models, while proactively identifying and mitigating threats through continuous monitoring, incident response, and compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee network upgrades, migrations, and new technology implementations, ensuring minimal disruption.
  • Monitor network performance and proactively recommend improvements for scalability and efficiency.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive network documentation, including diagrams, configurations, and standard operating procedures.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including security, systems, and application groups.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to other Infrastructure Engineers and IT staff.
  • Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices related to networking and network security.
  • Participate in capacity planning and disaster recovery preparedness.
  • Serve as an escalation point for troubleshooting and resolving critical network incidents.
  • Maintain compliance with industry regulations and organizational policies.
  • After hours and ability to be on call as required.
  • Ability to travel to other Transcat facilities to perform network maintenance as needed.
  • Model the Company's values to influence others to perform in an aligned manner.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience with software-defined networking (SDN) and SD-WAN technologies.
  • Familiarity with automation and scripting languages (Python, Ansible, PowerShell).
  • Prior experience leading network projects and mentoring teams.
  • Knowledge of compliance and security frameworks like CIS Critical Security Controls, PCI-DSS, ISO 27001, or NIST.

Education and Experience

  • 5-7 years of hands-on experience in network engineering roles.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Relevant certifications such as Cisco CCNP/CCIE, Juniper JNCIP, Palo Alto PCNSE, or Aruba ACSP preferred.
  • Deep knowledge of networking protocols (TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF) and technologies (MPLS, SD-WAN, SSE), routing, switching, and firewall management.
  • Experience with enterprise-grade network hardware such as Aruba or Cisco.
  • Experience with Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) solutions (e.g., Zscaler)
  • Strong expertise in network security practices.
  • Proficiency with network monitoring and management tools (e.g., SolarWinds).
  • Exceptional troubleshooting and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities.
