How much do virtual molecular biology jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 20, 2026, the average yearly pay for virtual molecular biology in the United States is $80,687.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $69,000.00 and $98,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is virtual molecular biology?

Virtual molecular biology refers to the use of computer-based tools and simulations to study and analyze biological molecules, such as DNA, RNA, and proteins. This field allows scientists to model biological processes, run experiments in silico, and predict molecular interactions without the need for physical laboratory work. Virtual molecular biology is commonly used in research, drug discovery, and education, providing a cost-effective and efficient way to explore complex biological systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual molecular biologist?

To thrive as a Virtual Molecular Biologist, you need a strong background in molecular biology, bioinformatics, and data analysis, typically supported by a relevant degree such as a BSc, MSc, or PhD in molecular biology or a related field. Proficiency with computational tools like BLAST, Python or R for data analysis, and laboratory information management systems (LIMS) is essential. Exceptional attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective remote communication skills help professionals excel in collaborative, virtual environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring accurate experimental design, data interpretation, and seamless teamwork in remote or hybrid research settings.

How do virtual molecular biologists typically collaborate with cross-functional teams in a remote work environment?

Virtual molecular biologists often work closely with bioinformaticians, data analysts, and project managers using digital communication and collaboration platforms. Regular video meetings, shared cloud-based data repositories, and collaborative software tools are common for discussing experimental results, troubleshooting issues, and aligning on project goals. Effective remote collaboration requires clear documentation, proactive communication, and adaptability to different time zones. These practices help ensure that projects progress smoothly, even when team members are distributed globally.

What is the difference between Virtual Molecular Biology vs Laboratory Molecular Biologist?

AspectVirtual Molecular BiologyLaboratory Molecular Biologist
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in molecular biology, genetics, or related fields; certifications varyRequires a degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, or related fields; lab certifications may be preferred
Work EnvironmentRemote, computer-based, data analysis, literature reviewLaboratory setting, hands-on experiments, sample processing
Employer & Industry UsageResearch institutions, biotech companies, universities (remote roles)Hospitals, research labs, biotech firms (lab-based roles)
Common Search & ComparisonOften compared for remote work options and data analysis rolesCompared for hands-on research and lab work

Virtual Molecular Biology focuses on remote, computer-based tasks such as data analysis and literature review, while Laboratory Molecular Biologists work directly in labs performing experiments. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds but differ significantly in work environment and daily responsibilities.

Job description

The Philips Institute for Oral Health Research in the Department of Oral & Craniofacial Molecular Biology (OCMB) at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Dentistry is seeking a full-time Research Scientist to join the Laboratory of Oral & Craniofacial Innovation (LOCI). The role focuses on advancing NIH-, industry-, and foundation-funded translational research to define the spatial and molecular architecture of cancer, chronic inflammatory diseases, and hostโ€“microbiome interactions.

The scientist will integrate single-cell and spatial multiomics, multiplex and deep visual proteomics, and precision-cut tumor and mucosal explant systems to create high-resolution maps of tissue microenvironments. A key responsibility is applying advanced computational and AI approaches, including machine learning and generative modeling, to build virtual tissue models, identify therapeutic targets, and test predictions in translational tissue systems.

Working with interdisciplinary teams across molecular biology, computational systems biology, and clinical oncology, the Research Scientist will translate spatial multiomic insights into precision diagnostics and next-generation therapies. Strong expertise in molecular and cellular biology, single-cell and spatial multiomics, and high-dimensional data analysis is required, with experience in cancer biology, immune-oncology, explant/organoid systems, and machine learning preferred. The position offers scientific independence and leadership in AI-enabled translational tissue modeling at VCU.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in molecular biology, cell biology, cancer biology, immunology, bioengineering, computational biology, or a related field
  • Minimum one (1) year of postdoctoral research experience
  • Strong expertise in molecular and cellular biology techniques
  • Experience with single-cell RNA sequencing and/or spatial multiomics, including experimental design and data interpretation
  • Experience analyzing high-dimensional biological datasets (e.g., transcriptomic, proteomic, multimodal) and familiarity with relevant computational workflows
  • Willingness to perform animal procedures in compliance within institutional and ethical guidelines
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within interdisciplinary teams
  • Experience mentoring trainees or junior personnel
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a record of peer-reviewed publications
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in cancer biology, immune-oncology, tumor microenvironment research, or chronic inflammatory disease modeling
  • Experience with translational tissue platforms (e.g., tumor explants, organoids, precision-cut tissue slices)
  • Advanced computational expertise in bioinformatics, spatial and multimodal omics integration, including proficiency in R and/or Python
  • Experience applying machine learning, network analysis, or multicellular interaction modeling to biological datasets
  • Experience integrating transcriptomic, proteomic, and imaging-based spatial data
  • Experience designing and interpreting drug perturbation or target validation studies, ideally within pharmaceutical collaborations or drug discovery pipelines
  • Experience with syngeneic mouse models, lineage tracing, organetic manipulation (e.g., CRISPR-based systems)
  • Demonstrated ability to lead collaborative research projects and contribute to grant submissions
Benefits

All full-time university staff are eligible for VCUโ€™s robust benefits package that includes comprehensive health benefits, paid annual and holiday leave, generous tuition benefits, retirement planning and savings options, tax-deferred annuity and cash match programs, employee discounts, well-being resources, abundant opportunities for career development and advancement, and more.
