How much do virtual mechanical engineering jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 16, 2026, the average yearly pay for virtual mechanical engineering in Washington is $116,519.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $92,300.00 and $143,300.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual mechanical engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, CAD modeling, and often a bachelor's degree in engineering. Familiarity with simulation software like ANSYS or SolidWorks, as well as remote collaboration tools, is typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for success in a virtual environment. These skills and qualities ensure accurate design, efficient teamwork, and timely project delivery in a remote setting.

What is a virtual mechanical engineer?

A Virtual Mechanical Engineer is a professional who designs, analyzes, and improves mechanical systems and components remotely, often using computer-aided design (CAD) and simulation software. They collaborate with clients and teams online to develop prototypes, run simulations, and solve engineering problems without being physically present at a specific location. This role is ideal for remote work environments and can support industries such as automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, and more.

How do virtual mechanical engineers typically collaborate with cross-functional teams in a remote work setting?

Virtual mechanical engineers often work closely with interdisciplinary teams, including product designers, electrical engineers, and project managers, using digital collaboration tools like CAD platforms, cloud-based project management software, and video conferencing. Effective communication and proactive documentation are key to ensuring alignment on project milestones and design iterations. Regular virtual meetings, shared design files, and clear version control help maintain productivity despite not being co-located. This collaborative approach enables virtual engineers to contribute meaningfully while balancing the flexibility of remote work.

What is the difference between Virtual Mechanical Engineering vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectVirtual Mechanical EngineeringMechanical Design Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in mechanical engineering, CAD certifications, and familiarity with simulation softwareRequires a degree in mechanical engineering or related field, with CAD and design software proficiency
Work EnvironmentPrimarily remote or virtual, using CAD, simulation, and collaboration toolsOften office-based or on-site, focusing on designing and testing mechanical components
Industry UsageUsed across industries for remote design, simulation, and analysis tasksCommonly employed in manufacturing, automotive, and product design sectors

Virtual Mechanical Engineering involves remote design, simulation, and analysis using digital tools, while Mechanical Design Engineers typically work on-site designing and testing physical components. Both roles require similar credentials but differ mainly in work environment and application focus.

Can I work remotely as a virtual mechanical engineer?

Yes, virtual mechanical engineering roles often allow for remote work, especially for tasks involving design, analysis, and simulation using CAD software and other digital tools. However, some positions may require on-site presence for manufacturing, testing, or client meetings, so job requirements vary by employer.

Clearance Requirement: Active Secret security clearance
Experience Requirement: 5+ years
Compensation Range: $130,000 - $200,000 (based on experience)
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer II to support the design, analysis, and development of mechanical systems for electronic products in a mission-focused environment. This role is ideal for a mid-level engineer with a strong background in thermal engineering, mechanical design, and electronics packaging, who can work independently while collaborating closely with cross-functional engineering teams.
The Mechanical Engineer II will play a key role in supporting Integrated Product Teams across the full product lifecycle, including design, analysis, prototyping, testing, and sustainment of digital, RF/analog, and mixed-signal electronics hardware. This position requires hands-on design experience and the ability to apply thermal principles to real-world engineering challenges.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design mechanical parts, enclosures, and assemblies for electronic systems using SolidWorks or similar CAD tools
  • Lead and support thermal analysis efforts for electronic hardware, including heat dissipation and airflow considerations
  • Perform and interpret thermal and structural evaluations through simulation and testing
  • Apply principles of conduction, convection, and radiation to improve system performance and reliability
  • Collaborate with electrical engineers to ensure proper PCB integration, mechanical fit, and thermal performance
  • Support prototype builds, design verification testing, and design reviews
  • Develop and maintain 3D models, 2D drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOMs)
  • Provide technical input on materials selection, manufacturability, and design trade-offs
  • Contribute to system-level design decisions and mentor junior engineers as needed

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
  • 5-10 years of relevant mechanical engineering experience
  • Hands-on experience with thermal engineering for electronic systems
  • Strong background in mechanical design and product development
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks or equivalent 3D CAD software
  • Solid understanding of heat transfer principles, including conduction, convection, and radiation
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and documentation skills
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team-based engineering environment

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience using ANSYS or similar analysis tools
  • Background in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
  • Experience analyzing convection and radiation effects in electronic systems
  • Familiarity with electronics packaging and PCB mechanical integration
  • Experience supporting prototyping, lab testing, and environmental testing

Benefits Overview
  • Paid Time Off: 15-25 days annually based on tenure, plus 11 paid holidays (never use-or-lose)
  • Retirement: Up to 15% employer contribution to a 401(k) through match and profit sharing
  • Medical Coverage: Free medical insurance for employees, with optional buy-up plans for dependents
  • Dental & Vision: Employer-paid plans with optional enhancements
