REPORTS TO: Manager, Tutoring and Learning Center
PLACEMENT: Grade 104
HIRING RANGE: $19.42 - $20.59 hourly

POSITION SUMMARY
Provides tutoring and leads various workshops pertaining to test preparation and other academic skills. Exercises a high level of discretion; provides professional, effective, and efficient customer service assistance to students, faculty, college personnel, and community members. Provides timely updates to the Director and Supervisor to keep them informed about tutoring needs, concerns, student-related issues, and the like. Considerable judgment and initiative in adapting work procedures to new situations are required. Tutoring hours are assessed each month and may be adjusted to accommodate TLC needs.
TUTORING AREAS
BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, COMPUTER SCIENCE, ENGLISH, MATH, NURSING, PHYSICS, and other subjects as determined by budgetary allocations and student demand.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Professionally represent Joliet Junior College and uphold the College's core values.
2. Tutor students in all levels of subject area and/or related courses, using both individual and small group tutoring sessions.
3. Provide exceptional customer service to all visitors including students, faculty, staff, and community members. Provide general assistance to students with disabilities as needed. Answer inquiries and provide information and referrals.
4. Maintain accurate and timely records of tutoring activities through the appropriate tools to provide data for student demand, site scheduling, and performance evaluations (i.e. Academic Success Tracker, and others).
5. Each semester, conduct Tutoring and Learning Center workshops in accordance with CRLA certification requirements; such workshops may include final exam review sessions, placement test preparation, TEAS preparation, High School Equivalency test preparation, writing a college application essay, writing a scholarship essay, using various pieces of software, etc.
6. Create, select, and develop instructional support materials that recognize and address individual student needs.
7. Meet with instructors to provide assistance that meets individual student needs.
8. Promote tutoring services through the distribution of flyers and schedules during class visitations, meetings with instructors, classroom presentations, and participation in other events as needed.
9. Participate in staff meetings, in-services, and trainings as may be required.
10. Assist with the interviewing, selecting, training, and mentoring of peer tutors.
11. Participate in departmental and collegiate goals and objectives.
12. Perform related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Bachelor's degree in subject to be tutored and/or related area.
2. Experience in teaching, tutoring, or delivering support at the post-secondary instructional level.
3. Ability to work with minimum supervision and to handle sensitive information with professionalism, discretion, and impartiality.
4. Patience, problem solving abilities, and a willingness to accept responsibility.
5. Strong verbal and written communication skills, and ability and willingness to work cooperatively with a diverse population.
6. LEAP Tutors (working with non-native speakers ONLY): TESOL/ TEFL certification.
7. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other members of the college and community, displaying cultural competence as well as emotional intelligence.
8. Demonstrated commitment to the college's core values of respect and inclusion, sustainability, integrity, collaboration, humor and well-being, innovation and quality.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Master's degree in subject to be tutored and/or related area.
2. Tutoring experience in a community college environment.
3. One (1) year experience in delivering academic support/instruction to individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds or diverse cultural/ethnic groups.
4. Experience in adult education.
5. Experience in virtual or online tutoring.
6. Training experience.
7. Math Tutors: Knowledge of math software such as StatCrunch and MyMathLab.
8. English and Spanish verbal and written communication proficiency.
9. Demonstrated multicultural competence.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
1. Normal office physical demands.
2. Ability to travel between campus locations and to and from community events.
WORKING CONDITIONS
1. Duties are performed indoors in the usual office or school environment.
