What is a virtual machine?

A virtual machine (VM) is a software-based simulation of a physical computer that runs an operating system and applications just like a real computer. VMs allow you to run multiple operating systems on a single physical machine, isolating each environment for security and flexibility. They are commonly used for software development, testing, server consolidation, and running legacy applications. Virtual machines are managed by a hypervisor, which allocates resources and ensures separation between VMs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual machine engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Machine Engineer, you need expertise in virtualization technologies, operating systems, and system architecture, usually supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with platforms such as VMware, Hyper-V, KVM, and tools like vSphere or VirtualBox, along with relevant certifications like VCP or RHCE, is highly valuable. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for managing complex environments and collaborating with IT teams. These skills ensure reliable deployment, maintenance, and optimization of virtual infrastructures, which are critical for modern business operations.

What are some common challenges faced by virtual machine administrators, and how can they be addressed?

Virtual Machine administrators often encounter challenges such as resource allocation conflicts, performance bottlenecks, and ensuring security across multiple virtual environments. Addressing these issues typically involves careful monitoring of resource usage, implementing automation for scaling, and staying up-to-date with security patches. Collaboration with network and storage teams is also essential to maintain optimal performance and prevent downtime.

What is the difference between Virtual Machine vs Cloud Engineer?

Executive Director, Enterprise Applications

Position Status:

FT - Full-Time

Build and Support the Systems That Run the College

The College of Western Idaho is seeking an Enterprise Applications Engineer to provide technical ownership of the enterprise systems that support college operations. The primary responsibility of this position is the administration, reliability, integration, and continuous improvement of CWI's Ellucian Colleague enterprise resource planning system.

Ellucian experience is not required. We are interested in candidates who have successfully supported complex enterprise applications, commercial ERP platforms, financial or administrative systems, or other multi-tier business applications. Experience gained in healthcare, government, finance, manufacturing, or another complex organization can translate well to this role.

CWI hosts Ellucian Colleague on Windows Server virtual machines in Microsoft Azure. Azure is therefore an important part of the technical environment, but this is primarily an enterprise application engineering position rather than a cloud architecture position. The successful candidate will understand how application, web, database, identity, integration, and infrastructure components work together as a complete system.

Position Summary

The Enterprise Applications Engineer administers and supports CWI's Ellucian Colleague ERP platform and related enterprise applications. This position manages application environments, coordinates upgrades and patches, troubleshoots issues across multiple technology layers, supports integrations, and helps ensure systems remain secure, available, and responsive.

The position also supports identity-related integrations between enterprise applications, Active Directory, and Microsoft Entra ID. It works with security, infrastructure, application, and support teams to ensure users receive accurate and appropriate access to college systems.

Applicants do not need previous Ellucian or higher education experience. Candidates with transferable enterprise application engineering experience are encouraged to apply.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Enterprise Application and ERP Administration

  • Serve as a primary technical administrator for Ellucian Colleague and its supporting application environment.

  • Install, configure, maintain, patch, and upgrade enterprise application components.

  • Coordinate application upgrades, maintenance activities, regression testing, and production validation.

  • Manage application services and hosting components, including Microsoft IIS, Apache Tomcat, Windows services, and scheduled processes.

  • Monitor application availability, capacity, performance, and system health.

  • Troubleshoot complex issues involving application, operating system, database, integration, authentication, and network components.

  • Conduct root cause analysis and implement durable solutions that reduce recurring incidents.

  • Manage configuration changes across development, test, and production environments.

  • Maintain technical documentation, system diagrams, configuration records, operational procedures, and recovery instructions.

  • Coordinate technical work with Ellucian and other software vendors throughout the application lifecycle.

Azure-Hosted Windows Server Environment

  • Administer the Azure virtual machines, storage, networking, and related services that host CWI's enterprise applications.

  • Maintain Windows Server operating systems and application hosting environments.

  • Coordinate operating system patching, application maintenance, backup, and recovery activities.

  • Monitor Azure-hosted systems using appropriate monitoring and logging tools.

  • Support system resilience, availability, disaster recovery, and capacity planning.

  • Work with IT Operations to resolve infrastructure issues affecting enterprise applications.

  • Identify practical opportunities to improve reliability, performance, security, and cost efficiency.

Identity and Access Integration

  • Support application authentication and authorization using Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID.

  • Maintain enterprise application integrations involving single sign-on, directory synchronization, multifactor authentication, account attributes, and group-based access.

  • Support automated provisioning and deprovisioning processes for enterprise applications.

  • Help maintain accurate identity data and appropriate access throughout account creation, role changes, transfers, and separation.

  • Partner with security, service desk, and application teams to resolve access issues and enforce least-privilege access.

  • Document application roles, service accounts, authentication dependencies, and access-control processes.

Database, Integration, and Automation

  • Support SQL Server databases used by Ellucian Colleague and related enterprise applications.

  • Write and optimize SQL for troubleshooting, reconciliation, integration support, and operational reporting.

  • Support integrations using REST APIs, SFTP, web services, middleware, scheduled processes, and vendor-provided tools.

  • Develop PowerShell scripts for application administration, system health checks, account processing, reporting, and repeatable operational work.

  • Monitor data exchanges and resolve failed, incomplete, or inaccurate integrations.

  • Work with database and data teams to support reliable movement of enterprise data.

Collaboration and Continuous Improvement

  • Collaborate with application owners, IT teams, vendors, and business stakeholders.

  • Translate technical issues and options into clear language for technical and nontechnical audiences.

  • Participate in enterprise application implementations, upgrades, replacements, and retirement planning.

  • Identify opportunities to automate manual tasks and improve operational consistency.

  • Cross-train team members and contribute to resilient support practices.

  • Protect institutional data and follow applicable security, privacy, and compliance requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, information systems, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.

  • Experience administering or supporting a complex enterprise application, ERP platform, financial system, administrative system, or multi-tier business application.

  • Experience supporting Windows Server-based application environments.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server or another relational database platform.

  • Experience troubleshooting issues across application, server, database, identity, integration, and network layers.

  • Experience with application upgrades, patching, testing, change management, and production support.

  • Ability to create and maintain clear technical documentation.

  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience operating Windows Server workloads on Microsoft Azure virtual machines or another cloud-hosted infrastructure platform.

  • Experience with Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID, single sign-on, multifactor authentication, or automated user provisioning.

  • PowerShell or other scripting and automation experience.

  • Experience supporting REST APIs, SFTP, web services, middleware, or scheduled integrations.

  • Experience with Ellucian Colleague, another ERP platform, or a similarly complex enterprise system.

  • Familiarity with IIS, Apache Tomcat, Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Azure Backup, or Azure Site Recovery.

  • Microsoft AZ-104, AZ-800, AZ-801, SC-300, or a related technical certification.

  • Experience in education, government, healthcare, finance, or another regulated environment.
