What does a virtual Linux kernel developer do?

A Virtual Linux Kernel Developer specializes in designing, developing, and maintaining the core components of the Linux operating system, particularly in virtualized environments. This includes working on kernel modules, optimizing performance for virtual machines, and fixing bugs related to virtualization technologies. They often collaborate with open-source communities and contribute to projects that enhance Linux's compatibility with different hypervisors and cloud platforms. Their role is critical in ensuring the efficiency, security, and stability of Linux systems running in virtualized settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual Linux kernel developer?

To thrive as a Virtual Linux Kernel Developer, you need deep expertise in Linux kernel architecture, C programming, and operating system concepts, typically supported by a degree in Computer Science or related fields. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, debugging tools such as GDB, and experience with virtualization technologies (e.g., KVM, QEMU) are essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective remote communication distinguish outstanding professionals in this role. These skills are crucial for developing robust kernel modules, diagnosing complex issues, and collaborating efficiently within distributed development teams.

What are some common challenges faced by virtual Linux kernel developers when debugging complex virtualization issues?

Virtual Linux Kernel Developers often encounter intricate challenges when debugging issues related to virtualization, such as timing discrepancies, non-deterministic behavior, and compatibility with diverse hypervisors. These issues can be difficult to isolate since they may only manifest under specific workloads or hardware configurations. Collaboration with systems engineers, QA teams, and sometimes upstream kernel communities is usually essential to identify root causes and implement robust solutions. Being comfortable with low-level debugging tools, kernel logs, and patch testing in virtual environments is key to overcoming these challenges.

What is the difference between Virtual Linux Kernel Developer vs Virtual Linux System Programmer?

Job description

The Defense Sector at Leidos is seeking a Linux System Engineer to support a fast-paced program with the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center (AFLCMC). In this role, you will design, deploy, maintain, and optimize enterprise infrastructure supporting classified mission systems. Working closely with cross-functional teams, you'll help deliver reliable, secure, and scalable infrastructure while supporting system deployments, lifecycle management, automation, and operational readiness.

This position requires 100% on-site support in Oklahoma City, OK.

Why This Role Matters

  • Modern mission systems depend on resilient, well-engineered infrastructure. As mission requirements evolve, organizations face increasing complexity from system integration, infrastructure modernization, and the need to deliver capabilities efficiently without sacrificing reliability or security.
  • As a Linux System Engineer, you'll help build and sustain the foundational platforms that enable mission success. You'll improve automation, standardization, and operational efficiency while delivering infrastructure that is reliable, scalable, and easier to deploy, manage, and maintain across enterprise environments.

What You'll Bring

  • You have experience supporting enterprise or classified infrastructure with a strong understanding of Windows and Linux systems, virtualization, enterprise core services, storage, networking, and systems integration. You are comfortable deploying, maintaining, and troubleshooting complex environments while improving automation, reliability, and operational efficiency.
  • Most importantly, you're a self-starter who values accountability, continuous improvement, and technical excellence. You exercise sound judgment, work effectively with minimal oversight, and serve as a trusted engineering partner to both technical teams and leadership.
  • If you're looking for an opportunity to modernize mission-critical infrastructure, influence technical direction, and make a measurable impact supporting national defense, we'd like to talk with you.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Install, configure, maintain, and patch physical and virtual Linux servers.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize system performance to ensure high availability, reliability, and operational readiness.
  • Manage operating system updates, security hardening, and configuration changes in accordance with DoD policies and standards.
  • Support system backups, disaster recovery, and data integrity to ensure business continuity.
  • Administer system access, user accounts, and security configurations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support system deployments, software integration, and infrastructure modernization.
  • Maintain accurate system documentation, configuration records, and operational procedures.
  • Respond to and resolve infrastructure and system issues, including performance, availability, and security-related incidents.
  • Promote knowledge sharing, continuous improvement, and technical collaboration across the team.

Basic Qualifications:

  • US Citizen with at least a Top Secret clearance and the ability to obtain a SCI prior to your start date
  • Bachelor's degree with 4+ years of experience or Master's degree with 2+ years of experience. Additional years of experience will be considered in lieu of a degree
  • DoD 8140 Intermediate certification or DoD 8570 IAM Level II certification (or higher)
  • Foundational experience with cloud platforms such as AWS and Azure
  • Experience administering Linux and Windows environments, including networking fundamentals and common protocols (HTTP, HTTPS, SSL/TLS, SMTP, DNS).
  • Problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to bring structure and clarity to ambiguous or unstructured information.
  • Self-starter that can work independently while possessing excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • US Citizen with an active TS/SCI security clearance
  • Linux certifications (RHCSA, RHCE, CompTIA Linux+)
  • Experience administering Red Hat Satellite
  • Experience with virtualization platforms, including VMware ESXi and Microsoft Hyper-V
  • Experience with enterprise infrastructure services, including PKI, certificate management, RSA Authentication Manager, RDS, and VDI
  • Experience automating system administration using Ansible, including developing custom playbooks
  • Familiarity with ITSM platforms such as ServiceNow and Jira Service Management
