Position Summary The CMM Inspector is a critical member of the Quality Assurance team responsible for performing precise dimensional inspections of complex machined parts, assemblies, and components using Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM). This role ensures that manufactured products consistently meet engineering specifications, advanced Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) requirements per ASME Y14.5, customer standards, and regulatory compliance. The CMM Inspector plays a key role in maintaining high product quality, supporting continuous improvement initiatives, and preventing non-conforming parts from reaching the customer.

Key Responsibilities

• Set up, program, and operate CMM equipment (both manual and DCC/CNC modes) using touch probe and/or scanning probe systems to perform accurate dimensional inspections.
• Develop, modify, optimize, and validate CMM inspection programs using PC-DMIS, Calypso, MCOSMOS, or equivalent metrology software.
• Thoroughly interpret and apply complex engineering drawings with advanced GD&T callouts (per the latest ASME Y14.5 standard), including:
  • All form, orientation, location, profile, and runout tolerances
  • Proper establishment and simulation of Datum Reference Frames (DRFs)
  • Feature Control Frames (FCFs), including composite tolerancing and multiple single-segment controls
  • Material Condition Modifiers (MMC, LMC, RFS) and their impact on tolerance zones and bonus tolerance calculations
  • Projected tolerance zones, regardless of feature size (RFS), and datum shift concepts
  • Profile tolerances (bilateral, unilateral, and unequally disposed) applied to surfaces and lines
  • Position tolerances with and without datum references, including pattern location and coaxiality controls
• Conduct First Article Inspections (FAI), in-process inspections, final inspections, and receiving inspections as required.
• Analyze inspection data, prepare detailed inspection reports (including GD&T-specific deviation and out-of-tolerance explanations), and maintain accurate records in the company’s Quality Management System (QMS).
• Perform routine calibration verification and maintenance on CMM equipment and other precision measuring instruments.
• Identify, document, and segregate nonconforming material; actively participate in root cause analysis and corrective/preventive action (CAPA) processes, with clear explanation of GD&T-related deviations.
• Collaborate effectively with Quality Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Production, and Supplier Quality teams to resolve quality issues and drive process improvements.
• Support internal and external audits (customer, AS9100, ISO 9001, etc.) by providing inspection data and demonstrating GD&T compliance.
• Train and mentor junior inspectors or production personnel on proper inspection techniques, CMM operation, and GD&T interpretation when required.
• Continuously improve inspection processes, reduce inspection time, and enhance overall measurement accuracy and efficiency.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Minimum 2–5 years of hands-on experience operating and programming CMMs in a manufacturing environment.
• Advanced proficiency in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5 (2018 or current revision), demonstrated by the ability to:
  • Correctly decode and apply every GD&T symbol and modifier in real-world inspection scenarios
  • Construct and simulate complete Datum Reference Frames on both physical parts and CMM software
  • Calculate and apply bonus tolerances, virtual condition, and resultant condition boundaries
  • Differentiate between and inspect all tolerance categories: Form, Orientation, Location, Profile, and Runout
  • Interpret and inspect composite feature control frames, pattern tolerancing, and coaxial/ concentricity controls
  • Understand and apply Rule #1 (Envelope Principle), Rule #2 (Regardless of Feature Size), and all datum precedence rules
• Strong ability to read and interpret complex engineering blueprints, specifications, and technical documentation.
• Proficiency with at least one major CMM software platform (PC-DMIS, Calypso, MCOSMOS, or equivalent).
• Solid experience with traditional precision inspection tools (micrometers, calipers, height gauges, optical comparators, surface plates, etc.).
• Working knowledge of Quality Management Systems and standards (ISO 9001, AS9100, IATF 16949 preferred).
• Strong computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) and ERP/QMS systems.
• Exceptional attention to detail, analytical mindset, and commitment to accuracy.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while adhering to established procedures and safety standards.
• Good written and verbal communication skills (including the ability to clearly explain GD&T concepts to non-technical stakeholders).

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Technology, Quality Assurance, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
• Experience working in regulated industries such as Aerospace, Defense, Automotive, or Medical Devices.
• Familiarity with Statistical Process Control (SPC), Measurement System Analysis (MSA), and capability studies (Cp/Cpk, Pp/Ppk).
• Knowledge of FAI requirements per AS9102.
• Experience with portable metrology equipment (Laser Tracker, FaroArm, etc.) is a plus.
• Basic understanding of machining processes (CNC milling, turning, grinding, etc.).

Physical & Working Conditions

• Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs.
• Manual dexterity and good vision (with or without corrective lenses) required for precise measurement work.
• Work is primarily performed in a climate-controlled manufacturing environment with exposure to moderate noise levels.
