Job description

Middle School Math Teacher
School Overview
Founded in 1867, Rowland Hall is an independent school in Salt Lake City serving approximately 1,000 students in preschool through twelfth grade. Driven by our vision of developing people the world needs, we believe in a transformational education that gives students agency and purpose, connects them to their global community, and empowers them to make the world a better place for all.
Rowland Hall sets the standard for teaching and learning excellence through our academic and co-curricular programs, including experiential learning opportunities, artistic self-expression, and a competitive athletic program that challenges students inside and outside the classroom. We foster curiosity, compassion, joy throughout the learning process, and graduate young adults who know how to think critically and are inspired to make a difference.
Located near the base of the stunning Wasatch Mountain Range and adjacent to the University of Utah, a world-class research university and medical center, Rowland Hall attracts a diverse community of families. The school focuses on recruiting and retaining high-quality employees by offering extensive professional development opportunities, competitive salaries with local districts and market rates, and a close-knit, supportive community.
About the Middle School
The Middle School serves students in grades 6-8 at the Lincoln Street Campus, focusing on academic, emotional, and social growth through a developmentally appropriate lens. The division promotes a strong culture of professional growth, collegiality, and collaboration among faculty and staff. Our program emphasizes experiential learning through robust co-curricular offerings, including arts, athletics, and community engagement. Middle School-specific initiatives include a series of overnight class and grade-level trips designed to build community, a dedicated Winter Sports program, and various local community partnerships. To support digital literacy and modern pedagogy, the Middle School operates a 1-1 iPad program, with all faculty and staff utilizing the Canvas learning management system and Veracross student information system.
Position Summary
Rowland Hall is seeking an innovative and student-centered Middle School Math Teacher to join our faculty. This full-time role includes teaching middle school mathematics and leading a grade-level advisory. The ideal candidate will inspire curiosity and a love of learning math through engaging, inquiry-driven instruction, helping students build confidence in their mathematical abilities while developing strong quantitative reasoning and problem-solving skills. We value educators who connect mathematics to real-world applications, support students' academic growth and readiness, and foster inclusive classrooms that challenge traditional narratives about who belongs in mathematics.
Primary Job Responsibilities
  • Teach middle school mathematics, designing and delivering engaging, developmentally appropriate instruction that builds student confidence in mathematical skills
  • Develop and implement inquiry-based, student-centered lessons that promote problem-solving, critical thinking, and real-world application of mathematics
  • Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learners' needs and ensure equitable access to the curriculum
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and well-managed classroom environment that supports curiosity, collaboration, and student engagement
  • Collaborate with colleagues to design, refine, and align curriculum in support of student learning and the mission of the department and school
  • Work closely with grade-level teams, department members, administrators, and counselors to support student growth and ensure smooth academic and social transitions
  • Participate actively in department, grade-level, and all-school meetings, and contribute to a collaborative professional culture
  • Communicate proactively with students, families, and colleagues to support student success and well-being
  • Integrate technology thoughtfully to enhance instruction and student learning
  • Maintain an organized, safe, and productive classroom environment
  • Contribute to the broader school community through participation in advisory, school events, and co-curricular opportunities
Skills and Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in mathematics, education, or a related field required; master's degree preferred
  • Experience working with middle school students and supporting their academic and social-emotional growth
  • Strong content knowledge in mathematics and the ability to engage a range of learners
  • Ability to differentiate instruction and effectively teach students with diverse abilities, interests, and backgrounds
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage classroom and professional responsibilities effectively
  • Demonstrated cultural competence and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Strong collaboration, communication, and interpersonal skills when working with students, families, and colleagues
  • Proficiency with educational technology, including learning management systems (e.g., Canvas), Google Workspace, and other web-based tools
  • Commitment to supporting and promoting the mission and values of Rowland Hall

The requirements listed are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:
  • work on-site in a school environment
  • be able to move around a classroom and outdoor space easily, for supervising and working with students
  • work individually and in a team environment to support the strategic priorities of the school, and be able to contribute in an organized and productive manner as a team member of grade-level, division, and all-school groups
  • lift up to 25 pounds of supply boxes or other materials
Additional Information
This is a full-time exempt position, reporting to the Head of Middle School. The anticipated start date is August 1, 2026. Compensation is based on level of education and years of relevant experience.
