What does a village veterinarian do?

A village veterinarian provides medical care to animals in rural or village settings. Their duties typically include diagnosing and treating illnesses, performing surgeries, vaccinating animals, and offering advice to pet and livestock owners on animal health and welfare. They may work with a wide range of animals, including pets, livestock, and sometimes wildlife. Often, village veterinarians also play a crucial role in promoting public health by controlling zoonotic diseases and educating the community. Their work is essential for ensuring the well-being of animals and supporting the livelihoods of local residents.

What are some of the common challenges veterinarians face when working in a village veterinary clinic?

Veterinarians in village clinics often work with limited resources and may encounter a broader range of animal species, from farm animals to pets. They frequently face challenges such as providing care with fewer diagnostic tools, managing emergency cases with minimal support staff, and building trust with clients who may have different levels of access to veterinary education. Additionally, village veterinarians often play a crucial role in community education about animal health, requiring strong communication and problem-solving skills. Despite these challenges, the role offers meaningful connections with clients and opportunities to make a significant impact on animal and public health.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a village veterinarian, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Village Veterinarian, you need a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree, state licensure, and strong diagnostic and surgical skills. Familiarity with veterinary practice management software, laboratory equipment, and animal handling tools is essential. Excellent communication, compassion, and problem-solving abilities help build trust with animal owners and work effectively with support staff. These skills ensure high standards of animal care, effective client relationships, and smooth clinic operations in rural or small community settings.

Job description

Overview

Experienced Veterinary Practice Manager | Village Veterinary Clinic | Mayfield, OH

Good hospitals don't happen by accident. Great hospitals are built by great leaders.

Village Veterinary Clinic is searching for an experienced Veterinary Practice Manager who is ready to make a lasting impact.

This is not a turnaround opportunity. It is something even better.

Village Veterinary Clinic has a loyal client base, an exceptional team, and a Medical Director who genuinely values high-quality medicine and sound business practices. Our long-time Practice Manager has helped build the foundation of our success and is transitioning into an Associate Practice Manager role where she can continue mentoring the team without carrying the full weight of day-to-day leadership.

Now we're looking for the right leader to bring fresh energy, new ideas, and operational excellence to help us reach the next level.

About the Opportunity

You'll partner closely with Dr. Keith Huston, our Medical Director, an experienced veterinarian who values collaboration, understands the business of veterinary medicine, and is committed to investing in the future of the hospital. Like many successful Medical Directors, Dr. Huston wears many hats. Between leading the medical team and maintaining a busy surgery schedule, he's looking for a strong operational partner who is passionate about leading the business, developing people, and helping Village Veterinary Clinic reach its full potential. We're looking for someone who enjoys leading people, coaching managers, improving systems, developing future leaders, and creating a workplace where both clients and team members thrive. If you're energized by building culture instead of maintaining the status quo, we'd love to meet you.

What You'll Do

As Practice Manager, you'll lead the business operations of the hospital while partnering with Dr. Keith Huston to ensure exceptional patient care, outstanding client service, and a highly engaged team.

You’ll be responsible for:

  • Leading and developing an engaged, accountable team
  • Coaching supervisors and future leaders
  • Creating efficient workflows that improve the client experience
  • Driving financial performance through labor, inventory, and operational management
  • Building a culture of accountability, communication, and continuous improvement
  • Supporting recruiting, onboarding, and employee development
  • Partnering with the Associate Practice Manager to leverage her years of knowledge while implementing new ideas
  • Working alongside Encore Vet Group's leadership team for continued professional growth and support
We're Looking For Someone Who...
  • Has previous veterinary Practice Manager or multi-site leadership experience
  • Is confident having difficult conversations while building trust
  • Loves coaching and developing people
  • Can identify opportunities others may not see
  • Balances compassion with accountability
  • Understands veterinary financials and operational metrics
  • Thrives in a collaborative leadership environment
  • Wants to leave a legacy, not just manage a schedule
  • CVPM certification is a plus but not required.
Why Village Veterinary Clinic?

You’ll inherit a hospital with:

  • An established and loyal client base
  • A highly experienced Associate Practice Manager who knows the hospital inside and out
  • A collaborative Medical Director, Dr. Keith Huston, who values partnership and is excited to empower a strong operational leader
  • A team ready to continue growing
  • Support from Encore Vet Group's experienced leadership team
  • Opportunities for continued professional development and career growth

This Role Is Perfect For Someone Who... Has been thinking:

"I know this hospital could be even better if someone was focused on leadership, accountability, and team development."
