Job description

Department: Machine Shop
Reports To: Department Manager
Physical Demand Level: Medium to Heavy
FLSA Status (US only): Non-Exempt
SUMMARY:
The Tool Maker II is responsible for independently manufacturing, repairing, modifying, and maintaining precision tools, dies, molds, jigs, fixtures, and gauges used in production operations. This position requires advanced machining skills, blueprint interpretation, and the ability to work with close tolerances. The Tool Maker II also supports continuous improvement by recommending design enhancements and ensuring tooling meets quality and production requirements.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This role does not have supervisory responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Manufacture precision tools, dies, fixtures, and gauges using manual and CNC machining equipment.
  • Set up and operate mills, lathes, grinders, and other shop tools.
  • Work with steel, aluminum, plastics, and specialty alloys.
  • Inspect machining work to ensure accuracy within specified tolerances.
  • Disassemble, repair, and rebuild worn or damaged tools and dies.
  • Sharpen cutting tools, replace components, and adjust tooling to meet performance standards.
  • Troubleshoot tooling issues affecting production and implement corrective actions.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, CAD drawings, GD&T symbols, and engineering specifications.
  • Collaborate with engineering and production teams to clarify requirements and optimize designs.
  • Recommend improvements to tool geometry, durability, and manufacturability.
  • Verify dimensions using precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, CMM, height gauges).
  • Ensure all tooling meets quality, safety, and compliance standards.
  • Document repairs, modifications, and preventive maintenance activities.
  • Assist machine operators and production teams with tooling setup and troubleshooting.
  • Ensure tooling is ready, safe, and efficient for scheduled jobs.
  • Provide input on process improvements and fixture designs to enhance efficiency.

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES:
  • Proficiency with manual machining and at least basic Mazatrol CNC operation.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical principles, tolerances, and materials.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and GD&T.
  • Skilled in the use of precision measurement instruments.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in tool making, precision machining, or mold/die work
  • Experience with Mazatrol CNC programming

Salary Range:
$35.00 - $40.00/Hour based on experience
