What is a video game developer?

Video game developers are professionals who design, create, and program video games for computers, consoles, or mobile devices. They work as part of a team to develop the gameplay, graphics, user interface, and storylines that make up a video game. Developers can specialize in various areas such as game design, programming, art, animation, or sound. Their responsibilities often include coding, testing, debugging, and collaborating with other team members to ensure the game runs smoothly and meets creative vision. Video game developers may work for large studios or as independent creators.

What does a video game developer do?

A video game developer has several responsibilities, including creating efficient and clean code, producing gameplay feature and game idea prototypes, and helping to create the engine or base of games. You can choose to specialize in a specific platform, such as creating games for a console system, smartphones, or a computer system. Your duties may require you to develop game concepts, write code, work with sprints or Agile methodology, or assist with the game’s audio and design features. You may also collaborate with other video game creators to polish the game once you finish it.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a video game developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Video Game Developer, you need strong programming skills (often in C++, C#, or Java), a solid understanding of game design principles, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with game engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine and version control systems like Git is essential. Creativity, problem-solving, and the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams are important soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are vital for creating engaging, technically sound games that meet both artistic and functional requirements in a competitive industry.

What are some common challenges video game developers face when working on large-scale projects?

Video Game Developers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with large, multidisciplinary teams, managing shifting project requirements, and adhering to tight deadlines. Communication and collaboration are essential, as developers must work closely with artists, designers, and quality assurance testers to ensure a cohesive final product. Job description

Discord has a highly engaged community of millions of daily active users who use the platform for many different reasons, but there’s one thing that nearly everyone does: play video games. Discord plays a uniquely important role in the future of gaming, and we are focused on making it easier and more fun for people to hang out before, during, and after playing games.

Discord's Payments, Fraud & Risk team enables revenue growth and protects Discord's financial health by managing payments optimization and fraud risk as a strategic function. We operate across three core areas: identifying and mitigating large-scale fraud to enable clean revenue, optimizing the cost of payments through chargeback strategy and card network fee mitigation, and partnering with Product, Revenue, and Engineering early to surface and address fraud risk β€” so Discord can launch with confidence and maximize revenue outcomes.

As Discord matures, this team serves as the connective tissue between Payments Strategy, Engineering, Legal, Product, and Revenue β€” embedding fraud and financial risk expertise into everything Discord does, with a bias toward enabling growth.

As a Payments & Fraud Analyst on Discord's Payments, Fraud & Risk team, you will own one or more of the team's core functions end-to-end β€” leading cross-functional programs, shaping fraud and payments strategy, and driving the fraud risk decisions that let Discord launch products with confidence and maximize clean revenue.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Own high-scale fraud detection and mitigation, payments operations, and risk assessment within your assigned area end-to-end β€” from strategy through execution and post-launch measurement
  • Lead high complexity fraud investigations, perform root cause analyses, and translate findings into concrete proposals for rule improvements and cross-functional action
  • Write SQL queries to analyze fraud and payments data, and build reporting and monitoring dashboards and alerts (e.g., Mode, Datadog) that track performance and inform decision-making
  • Program manage cross-functional initiatives with Engineering, Legal, Payments Strategy, Product, Revenue, and other partners β€” setting milestones, managing dependencies, and driving delivery
  • Contribute to risk assessments for new product launches, identifying fraud exposure early and executing mitigation strategies
  • Communicate the business impact of your work to cross-functional stakeholders β€” pre, during, and post-launch β€” adjusting level of detail based on audience
  • Mentor junior team members and contribute to team-wide quality and knowledge sharing
What you should have
  • 4–5+ years of experience in payments, fraud, or risk operations, with direct, hands‑on exposure to card network rules, chargebacks, and dispute processes
  • Deep working knowledge of payments flows, card network rules (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, etc.), and chargeback/dispute processes
  • Proficiency in SQL, with hands‑on experience querying and analyzing large datasets to drive fraud and payments decisions
  • Experience building reporting and monitoring workflows using BI and alerting tools (e.g., Mode, Datadog, or equivalent)
  • Proven ability to independently own an end-to-end function and execute mid-size programs with minimal oversight, making judgment calls that weigh business impact and tradeoffs
  • Comfort navigating ambiguous problems where the issue is known but the right solution requires evaluating multiple options, with the ability to anticipate near‑term risks and proactively flag or mitigate them
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex, technical findings into business‑impact narratives for cross‑functional and senior stakeholders
  • Experience mentoring others or serving as a technical resource on a team, with a collaborative, cross‑functional operating style comfortable navigating differing viewpoints with peers across Engineering, Legal, Product, and Revenue

Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma counties). Relocation assistance may be available.

The US base salary range for this full‑time position is $144,000 to $162,000 + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role and level. Within the range, individual pay is determined by additional factors, including job‑related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Please note that the compensation details listed in US role postings reflect the base salary only, and do not include equity, or benefits.
