What does a video director do?

A Video Director is responsible for overseeing the creative and technical aspects of video production. They work closely with producers, writers, camera operators, and editors to bring a project’s vision to life, guiding actors and crew to achieve the desired look and feel. Their duties include interpreting scripts, planning shots, managing on-set logistics, and making key decisions on visual style and pacing. Video Directors play a crucial role in ensuring the final product aligns with the project's goals and maintains high production quality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a video director?

To thrive as a Video Director, you need a strong background in visual storytelling, film production, and creative direction, often supported by a degree in film, media, or a related field. Mastery of editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro, camera equipment, and familiarity with industry-standard workflows is crucial. Exceptional leadership, communication, and time management skills set standout directors apart by enabling them to guide teams and translate creative visions into reality. These skills ensure the creation of compelling content, efficient production processes, and effective collaboration across all stages of video projects.

How much do video directors make?

Video directors' salaries vary based on experience, industry, and project scope. According to industry data, the median annual salary for a video director is around $70,000, with some earning over $100,000 for high-profile or commercial work. Many directors also earn additional income through freelance projects and royalties.

What are the most common challenges a video director faces when leading a production team, and how can they be addressed?

A Video Director often faces challenges such as balancing creative vision with budget constraints, managing tight shooting schedules, and ensuring effective communication among diverse team members. To address these, it's important to maintain clear, proactive communication, set realistic expectations early, and collaborate closely with department leads like producers, cinematographers, and editors. Flexibility and problem-solving skills are crucial for adapting to unforeseen changes on set, and successful directors foster a collaborative, respectful environment to keep the team motivated and focused on shared goals.

How do you become a video director?

To become a video director, individuals typically gain experience by working in related roles such as videographer or assistant director, develop strong skills in storytelling, editing, and camera operation, and often pursue a degree or training in film, media production, or related fields. Building a portfolio of work and networking within the industry are also important steps toward securing directing opportunities.

Job description

We are seeking a talented and dynamic Video & Photo Specialist to join the Social Production team at Trove Brands. This role will be responsible for concepting, capturing, producing, and editing best-in-class photo and video content that drives engagement across our portfolio of brands. The ideal candidate is a social-first visual storyteller with expertise behind both the camera and in post-production, balancing creative vision with platform performance.

Responsibilities

  • Content Creation: Concept, capture, edit, and deliver high-quality photography and short-form video content for Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and emerging social platforms. Produce supporting assets including stills, GIFs, thumbnails, graphics, and platform-specific deliverables.
  • Creative Direction: Partner with Social Media Specialists, Art Directors, Designers, and Brand Marketing teams to develop social-first creative concepts aligned with campaign objectives, brand identity, and audience insights.
  • Video Production: Lead all phases of video production, including pre-production planning, shot lists, lighting, audio, filming, editing, color correction, motion graphics, captions, and final delivery.
  • Photography: Capture lifestyle, product, event, creator, and campaign photography that supports both always-on social content and larger marketing initiatives.
  • Trend Monitoring: Stay current on social trends, creator content, editing styles, platform updates, and emerging production techniques to continuously elevate creative output.
  • Creator & Influencer Collaboration: Work alongside creators, influencers, athletes, and talent to develop authentic, engaging content that feels native to each platform.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Partner closely with Brand, Creative, Events, Product Marketing, and Digital teams to ensure content supports broader business and campaign goals.
  • Asset Management: Organize, maintain, and archive photo and video assets while ensuring files are optimized for efficient cross-functional use.

Note, we anticipate a split of video and photo tasks to be accordingly: 65% video and 35% photo.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in social media content production, photography, videography, or a related creative role.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating both photography and video work, with an emphasis on social-first storytelling.
  • Expertise with cameras, lighting, audio equipment, and production workflows.
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Premiere Pro, Lightroom, Photoshop, After Effects preferred) and familiarity with additional content creation tools.
  • Strong understanding of social platform best practices, formats, and creative trends.
  • Excellent visual storytelling skills with a strong eye for composition, pacing, color, and design.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize deadlines, and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Film, Photography, Digital Media, or a related field (preferred but not required).
  • Portfolio or reel required.
