What is video design?

Video design is the process of creating visual content for various platforms by combining footage, graphics, animation, and special effects. Video designers work on projects such as commercials, films, social media content, and live events to communicate messages or stories visually. They use software tools like Adobe After Effects, Premiere Pro, and other editing programs to craft engaging videos. The role often involves collaborating with other creatives, understanding client briefs, and ensuring the final product meets the desired aesthetic and technical standards.

Video Design involves conceptualizing and creating the visual elements and layout of a video, focusing on aesthetics and storytelling. Video Editing centers on assembling footage, refining scenes, and finalizing the video. Both roles often collaborate but serve distinct parts of the video production process.

How do I get a job as a Video Editor?

To get a job as a Video Editor, develop strong skills in editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro, build a portfolio showcasing your work, and gain experience through internships or freelance projects. A relevant degree or certification can also improve your chances, along with understanding storytelling and visual design principles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Video Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Video Designer, you need a strong grasp of visual storytelling, graphic design principles, and video editing, often supported by a degree in design, film, or a related field. Proficiency in industry-standard software like Adobe After Effects, Premiere Pro, and motion graphics tools is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help Video Designers collaborate with clients and team members to realize a shared vision. These skills ensure the creation of engaging, high-quality video content that meets project goals and captivates audiences.

What is a video designer?

A video designer is a professional who creates visual content for videos, including animations, graphics, and visual effects. They often use tools like Adobe After Effects or Premiere Pro and collaborate with clients or production teams to develop engaging visual narratives.

Are video editors still in demand?

Video editors remain in demand due to the growth of digital content, social media, and online marketing. Skills in editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro, along with a strong portfolio, are valuable for securing opportunities in various industries.

Is AI replacing video editors?

AI is increasingly used to assist video editors by automating tasks such as editing, color correction, and effects, but it does not fully replace the need for human creativity and judgment. Video editing remains a skill that requires understanding storytelling, timing, and audience engagement, which AI tools currently support rather than replace. Video editors who adapt to new technologies and develop skills in AI-assisted editing tools can enhance their productivity and creativity.

How does a Video Designer typically collaborate with other creative professionals during a project?

Video Designers frequently work closely with directors, scriptwriters, graphic designers, sound engineers, and marketing teams to ensure the visual content aligns with the overall project vision. Collaboration often involves participating in brainstorming sessions, reviewing storyboards, and providing input on visual effects or animation styles. Regular communication is essential to balance creative ideas with technical feasibility and project deadlines, making teamwork a crucial part of the role.

Job description

Are you interested in shaping the future of entertainment. Do you want to define the next generation of how and what Amazon customers are watching. Prime Video is changing the way people watch movies and TV.

From one service, we're delivering versatile ways to watch hundreds of thousands of movies, TV series, and live events on the web, mobile, and TV. Our service is available in more than 200 territories globally, and we're just getting started.
Working closely with business and technology partners, we use research, design, and prototyping to guide early product development, bring clarity to engineering goals, and develop a customer-centric point of view. This is where you come in.
As a Design Technologist, you'll be a key part of our Experience Design organization

Your role will be all about proving, advancing, and evolving forward-looking UX concepts through prototyping and hands-on product work. You'll work alongside other design technologists to bring design ideas (interactions, visuals, motion) to life.
Key job responsibilities
- Build high-quality, functional prototypes that convey and advance the vision of future products
- Collaborate with design leadership and key stakeholders throughout the product lifecycle
- Work alongside designers, researchers, PMs, and engineers to drive concepts from idea to implementation
- Advance design thinking by leveraging your platform expertise (e.g. web, mobile, TV)
A day in the life
As a Design Technologist at Prime Video, you'll have the opportunity to wear many hats

We build prototypes across the Prime Video customer journey from helping customers discover their favorite content to designing new playback experiences including X-Ray, live sports, and advertising. Our team builds high-fidelity prototypes for TV, mobile and web clients using frontend technologies such as HTML/CSS/JS, React.js, Redux and Motion.js. Our team develops prototypes using AWS Bedrock to envision brand new Gen AI powered experiences for our customers.
About the team
We're scrappy yet detailed-oriented, knowing when to build quickly versus diving into the details to produce higher fidelity prototypes

We bring our own design vision and support our design and engineering partners to help them ship faster. We also partner closely with UX researchers to create new experiences that our customers get to test and provide feedback on. Our prototypes are demoed to senior leadership to showcase what the future of Prime Video will look and feel like for our customers.
