Job description

UX Director

We deliver our customers peace of mind every day by helping them protect what they value most. Our passion for placing the customer at the center of everything we do is driving a transformational shift at Liberty Mutual. Operating as a tech startup within a Fortune 100 company, we are leading a digital disruption that will redefine how people experience insurance.

At Liberty, you'll thrive in a hybrid setting that fosters in-person collaboration, innovation and growth. This approach optimizes both remote and in-person interactions, enabling you to connect and ideate with your team and deepen valuable relationships across the company, while still enjoying the flexibility of remote work for focused tasks and projects.

This role has a hybrid work schedule (2 days onsite) and we are considering candidates based in Portsmouth, NH, Boston, MA, Plano, TX, Indianapolis, IN and Columbus, OH. You must be authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship now or in the future. We will not sponsor employment visas. Candidates who will require future sponsorship, including candidates on CPT/OPT/STEMOPT who will require future sponsorship, are not eligible to apply.

We are an enterprise-focused team that seeks to empower the employees who deliver our customers peace of mind every day. We start by understanding the jobs employees are trying to get done, the outcomes that matter most to them and the business, and the barriers that make work harder than it needs to be. Grounded in that understanding, we're transforming a 40,000+ person global enterprise experience so employees can do their best work, build meaningful careers, and help our employees flourish.

We're looking for a UX Director to lead a talented group of 810 experience designers/researchers focused on enabling and maturing global employee experiences for our Enterprise Technology Organization. You'll set the strategic design vision and build the practice that delivers it. As a design director, you'll be a manager and a strategic contributor who oversees the holistic user experience for Liberty Mutual employees. You'll thrive here if you pair strategic design thinking with hands-on craft and a track record of managing designers and researchers.

Liberty Mutual has a positive, diverse, and supportive culture. We appreciate design leaders who are curious, humble, think deeply, speak clearly, and thrive on collaboration and feedback.

About the job:

  • Lead with purpose. Inspire and empower a team of experience designers & researchers to deliver elegant, human-centered solutions that build loyalty and strengthen trust with our customers.
  • Drive strategy and alignment. Shape the vision for global digital services, global cybersecurity and mobile app experiences and partner across product, technology, and business teams to bring that vision to life.
  • Champion design excellence. Guide your team in applying the right tools and methods at the right time to solve complex problems grounded in data, insights, and empathy.
  • Build the research practice. Lead and grow a small team of user researchers setting the research roadmap, raising the bar on method and rigor, and making sure findings reach the partners who act on them.
  • Advocate for the user. Ensure the user's voice is central to every decision by leveraging qualitative and quantitative research at all stages of design.
  • Foster purposeful innovation. Help your team explore AI and other transformative technologies through a responsible, human-centered lens that aligns experimentation with a clear purpose.
  • Collaborate across journeys. Partner with fellow UX leaders to ensure cohesive, seamless experiences across Liberty Mutual's ecosystem.
  • Elevate our practice. Strengthen design systems, workflows, and standards to deliver consistent, accessible, and scalable design solutions.
  • Grow great talent. Coach, mentor, and support your team's growth helping each designer or researcher sharpen their craft and expand their impact.
  • Deliver UX assets. Support and communicate designs to partners and stakeholders, including service design blueprints, product roadmaps, personas and journey maps, wireframes, flow diagrams, sitemaps, prototypes, UI designs, and more.
Qualifications
  • Bachelors or Masters Degree in technical or business discipline.
  • Minimum 10+ years of UX or design experience, with a proven record of leading multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Mastery in at least two UX disciplines (product design, content design, prototyping, research, front-end development, etc.) and fluency in the rest.
  • Experience applying Agile, Design Thinking, Lean UX, or similar frameworks to deliver measurable outcomes.
  • Exceptional communication and storytelling skills able to influence, align, and inspire across all levels of the organization.
  • Strategic thinking paired with deep empathy for users and a passion for crafting experiences that build trust.
  • A commitment to fostering an inclusive, creative, and growth-oriented design culture.
  • Proven ability to build cross-team relationships that align UX strategy and elevate user-centered design across the organization
  • Experience hiring design and research top-talent and actively engage in recruiting processes
