Vice President Scoping Engineer information

What does a Vice President Scoping Engineer do?

A Vice President Scoping Engineer is a senior engineering leader responsible for overseeing the early stages of project development, particularly the scoping, feasibility, and planning phases. They work closely with clients, stakeholders, and internal teams to define project requirements, assess risks, estimate costs, and outline technical solutions. By ensuring the scope is well-defined and achievable, they help set projects up for success and support strategic decision-making within the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Vice President Scoping Engineer?

To thrive as a Vice President Scoping Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, project management, and strategic planning, often supported by an advanced engineering degree and significant industry experience. Familiarity with project management software, CAD tools, and industry-specific technical standards is typically required, along with certifications such as PMP or PE. Outstanding leadership, negotiation, and communication skills set top candidates apart by enabling effective team management and stakeholder engagement. These skills are vital for accurately defining project scopes, aligning engineering solutions with business goals, and ensuring successful project delivery.

What is the difference between Vice President Scoping Engineer vs Project Engineer?

AspectVice President Scoping EngineerProject Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires engineering degree, extensive experience, and leadership skillsEngineering degree, relevant certifications, and project management experience
Work EnvironmentExecutive-level, strategic planning, overseeing multiple projectsOn-site and office work, managing specific projects
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in large engineering firms, energy, and infrastructure sectorsCommon across construction, civil, and engineering projects

The Vice President Scoping Engineer focuses on high-level strategic planning and oversight, often managing multiple projects and teams, while the Project Engineer handles the day-to-day technical and operational aspects of individual projects. Both roles require engineering credentials, but the VP role emphasizes leadership and strategic vision, whereas the Project Engineer emphasizes technical execution.

How does a Vice President Scoping Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during project development?

A Vice President Scoping Engineer works closely with departments such as sales, project management, design, and construction to define project requirements, identify potential risks, and establish clear deliverables. They often lead the scoping phase by facilitating discussions between stakeholders to ensure technical feasibility and alignment on objectives. Effective collaboration is crucial for balancing client expectations with operational capabilities, and the VP Scoping Engineer often acts as a bridge between executive leadership and engineering teams to drive successful project outcomes.

Job description

Vice President, Southeast Market
Southeast U.S. โ€” Florida strongly preferred; Carolinas also considered
Technology Consulting / Professional Services

This isn't just another VP role. It's a chance to build a market.

An established technology consulting organization is looking for a leader to own a $40Mโ€“$60M business across the Southeast โ€” full P&L, real client relationships, and the autonomy to actually shape how the region grows.

You'd be leading across sales, consulting, engineering, and delivery โ€” not managing one lane while someone else owns the rest. This is a business-builder's seat, not a caretaker role.

I'm looking to talk to leaders who bring:
  • A track record of owning a $30M+ P&L and actually growing it โ€” not just maintaining it
  • Real experience scaling a technology consulting or digital services business
  • The kind of executive presence that builds trusted, senior-level client relationships
  • A history of leading strong consulting and delivery teams, not just sales numbers
  • Comfort driving growth across both enterprise and mid-market accounts
  • Hands-on experience selling and delivering complex technology-enabled work โ€” software engineering, digital transformation, cloud, data, or consulting-led engagements
One honest note:

this role is built for someone who has run a services business specifically โ€” not a product company executive or an internal IT leader. If your background is consulting-side, close to clients and close to delivery, that's exactly who this is for.
