Job description


The Director of Advanced Practice Provider Education is a system-level Advanced Practice Provider (APP) leadership role responsible for the strategic oversight, coordination, and administration of APP education and professional development programs across the organization. This position provides leadership for APP educational initiatives, including the Transition to Practice Program, specialty practice preparation programs, and APP fellowship programs across all specialties. The APP Director of Education is also responsible for the development and oversight of student learning experiences, including coordination of priority school partnerships, clinical placement processes, and APP student rotations. Working collaboratively with clinical, academic, and operational leaders, this role ensures the delivery of high-quality educational programs that support APP recruitment, onboarding, professional growth, workforce development, and excellence in patient care.

Position details:
  • Provides leadership, oversight, and strategic direction for APP education programs across the organization.
  • Collaborates with system and service line leaders to identify APP education needs and develop and implement educational strategies to address those needs.
  • Oversees the coordination of APP student placements, including management of student application submissions and placement processes.
  • Coordinates student learning opportunities with academic institutions, program leaders, and academic coordinators.
  • Ensures adherence to the Inova Priority Schools Initiative and related student placement guidelines.
  • Partners with service lines and clinical practices to provide high-quality clinical learning experiences for APP students.
  • Maintains and oversees student management systems and processes to support efficient and appropriate clinical rotations.
  • Ensures compliance with all regulatory, accreditation, organizational, and site-specific requirements related to student rotations and educational programs.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates student assessment and rotation evaluation processes, including feedback mechanisms for both learners and clinical training sites.
  • Provides feedback to APP educational programs and academic partners regarding student performance and clinical rotation experiences.
  • Collaborates with system and service line leadership to identify, develop, implement, and expand APP fellowship opportunities across specialties.
  • Leads the System APP Fellowship Committee to enhance the coordination, consistency, efficiency, and quality of APP fellowship programs.
  • Ensures APP fellowship programs are designed, administered, and maintained in accordance with accreditation standards and oversees accreditation activities as appropriate.
  • Develops and maintains organizational APP education standards, including onboarding education, specialty practice preparation programs, and integration with the APP Transition to Practice Program.
  • Develops APP Grand Rounds programming, promotes integration with physician Grand Rounds, prepares and presents annual APP education reports to executive leadership, actively participates in APP leadership governance activities, and maintains an active clinical practice within their area of expertise.
Clinical Duties And Shift Expectations:
  • The lead position is expected to weight clinical practice during night shift or day shift
  • Rotate across weekends and nights, if needed, with an adequate frequency to understand specific needs of those shifts, making himself/herself available for communication of needs/problems/needed improvements to follow up with the VP of Advanced Practice Providers.
  • Allow for least 12 hours per month of administrative/nonclinical time to accomplish tasks and follow up for projects, research, and leadership communication in order to facilitate an organized
Minimum Requirements:
  • Certification - Basic Life Support prior to start; Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (for Critical Care) upon start; Pediatric Advanced Life Support (for Pediatrics) upon start
  • Licensure - Licensed Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner; If Nurse Practitioner: RN Compact License(depending on State of primary residence) AND a license (or eligibility for) as a nurse practitioner or physician assistant in the Commonwealth of Virginia AND a "Practice Agreement" signed by sponsoring/ supervising physician(s), AND a written "Scope of Practice/Protocol" signed by the supervising physician, AND "Drug Enforcement Administration License" (if prescribing controlled substances).
  • Experience - 5 years of APP/CRNA experience required and at least 1 year of previous leadership experience
  • Education - For Nurse Practitioners: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and Master's Degree in Advanced Clinical Practice or graduate of a post-masters certificate program for nurse practitioners, OR certificate from an education program that is accredited by the Council of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs/Schools, American College of Nurse Midwives, American Association of Colleges of Nursing of the National League for Nursing; For Physician Assistants: Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program
