Job description

VP, Business Operations
Reports to: SVP, Commercial Ops
Location: New York, NY (hybrid)
The VP, Business Operations serves as a strategic partner and operational right hand to the SVP Commercial Ops, driving execution of company-wide priorities across publishing, supply chain, distribution, technology, and shared services. This is a high-visibility role for a versatile executive who can move fluidly between strategy and execution, framing decisions for executives and unblocking cross-divisional initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
  • Act as a multiplier for the SVP, Commercial Operations: manage the operations agenda, prepare executive and board-level materials, and ensure follow-through on decisions and commitments
  • Lead special projects and strategic initiatives spanning multiple divisions - e.g., systems implementations, process redesign, distribution client onboarding, and workflow changes from framing through execution
  • Build the cross-functional operating management model: run monthly operating reviews, track KPIs across operations functions (pricing, inventory management, marketing spends/ROI), and surface risks and opportunities early
  • Serve as connective tissue between operations, sales, central marketing, publishing ops, IT, and the publishing divisions. Resolve cross-functional confusion and clearly define workflows.
  • Own executive reporting and analysis: synthesize operational, financial, and internal data into clear business recommendations
  • Evaluate new business opportunities and support due diligence on business development opportunities
  • Represent the SVP, Commercial Ops, in meetings and workstreams as delegated; communicate decisions and context across the organization
  • Support and manage the integration of new clients into HBG sales and distribution services, develop a playbook for client on-boarding and on-going support in partnership with the Distribution team

Qualifications
  • 10+ years in publishing, media, or consumer products, including significant operations experience, book publishing strongly preferred
  • Proven record leading cross-functional initiatives without direct authority
  • Strong financial and analytical fluency: comfortable with P&Ls, data, and building models yourself when needed
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication; able to distill complexity for executive and board audiences
  • High discretion and judgment
  • Familiarity with publishing operations (marketing, supply chain, distribution, title management, metadata/systems) a strong plus

As a leading book publisher, we believe that including and representing diverse voices in all aspects of our business is fundamental to what we do.
