What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a veterinary surgeon, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Veterinary Surgeon, you need a veterinary degree (such as a DVM or equivalent), surgical expertise, and a license to practice veterinary medicine. Familiarity with diagnostic imaging, anesthesia machines, laboratory equipment, and veterinary practice management software is highly beneficial. Strong soft skills include compassion, attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to work under pressure. These competencies are crucial for ensuring animal welfare, accurate diagnoses, and successful patient outcomes in clinical and surgical settings.

What is a veterinary surgeon?

A Veterinary Surgeon is a medical professional who diagnoses, treats, and prevents illnesses and injuries in animals. They perform surgeries, administer medications, and provide preventative care such as vaccinations and health check-ups. Veterinary Surgeons may work in private clinics, animal hospitals, research facilities, or zoos. Their role also includes advising pet owners on proper animal care, nutrition, and overall health.

What are some common challenges faced by veterinary surgeons in their daily work?

Veterinary Surgeons often encounter challenges such as managing emotionally charged situations, performing complex surgeries under time constraints, and diagnosing difficult cases with limited patient histories. They must also balance surgical duties with client communications, paperwork, and follow-up care. Collaborating with veterinary nurses, technicians, and pet owners requires patience and clear communication to ensure the best outcomes for animals. Being adaptable and able to handle both the physical and emotional demands of the job is essential to long-term success in this rewarding field.

Job description

Description:

Points East Veterinary Specialty Hospital of Wilson — one of only two VECCS-certified facilities in North Carolina—is seeking to add another board-certified surgeon to its exceptional team. Located in a new building designed by and for providers, you will spend your days cutting in suites bathed with natural light. Located just east of Raleigh, your peers will include fellow boarded specialists (Surgery, ECC, IM, and Radiology) and a stable team of thirteen full-time emergency veterinarians.

Every emergency veterinarian cuts ER cases. So, you will not be required to take call!

Your patients will receive comprehensive after-hours care, allowing you to maintain the work-life balance we all strive for.

Why Points East Veterinary Specialty Hospital
Established as a solo surgeon service in 2015 that partnered with an emergency practice in 2019, Points East VSH became Eastern NC’s first 24/7 ER + specialty hospital. Serving families from Raleigh to the Outer Banks, the region has become dependent on access to a DACVS Service.

The hospital provides a wide spectrum of care to a large region based on servant leadership values. With nearby sister hospitals, collaboration and camaraderie are already established cultural components.

You will play a pivotal role in shaping patient care protocols, mentoring staff, and contributing to training and development.

What We Offer:

  • Collaborative environment with nearby sister hospitals
  • A team founded with a servant-leadership style
  • Opportunity to lead and grow our entire hospital’s level of patient care
  • Experienced support from an established Specialty + ER team
  • Located in Wilson, NC, offering urban, suburban, or rural living options
  • Instinct Treatment + EMR, Dedicated ICU nursing team, Telemetry ECG, In-house 64-slice CT with an In-house DACVR, Endoscope, Laparoscope, High-Flow O2, x2 Hollowell Ventilators

Why Vets Pets:

  • Privately Owned: North Carolina-Based & Veterinarian-Led. No private equity investors dictating how you should practice medicine.
  • Commitment to Quality: With a slow growth mindset since 2007, the goal is not to build-to-sell but to build-to-sustain.
  • Visionary Leadership: Focus on giving veterinarians local practice ownership while influencing their hospital’s direction

Perks and Benefits:

  • Competitive salary
  • Opportunities to work with CVM students and ER Interns
  • Support for academic locum work if desired
  • Two medical plan options, plus dental, vision, and short-term disability coverage
  • 401(k) with employer match and immediate vesting
  • CE stipend
  • Professional dues, NC licensure, and AVMA liability insurance covered
  • Life insurance for you and eligible dependents
  • Flexible schedules and uniform allowance

Join a supportive, dynamic team and enjoy practicing high-level critical care backed by a stable, multidisciplinary specialty network.
